Christianity was first introduced to Japan in the 16th century by Portuguese traders and Jesuit missionaries. Buddhism was introduced to Japan from Korea and China in the 6th century and became the dominant religion, with over 90% of Japanese claiming adherence today though often blended with Shinto. It has had major cultural influences and remains an important part of Japanese culture and life.
