2. How did the reflection assignments help me
construct my understanding of the issues
discussed in the readings?
3. Issue 1: Use of Social Media for Personal Reflection
● Module two readings and activities lead me to
me thinking of my future short-term and long-
term future self in regards to contributing to
reflective practice repositories.
● According to Thomas et al. (2018) digital
traces contribute to innovative ways to self-
reflect, except there are concerns of how
social media information is presented.
● I use social media platforms and can agree
that platforms such as Facebook may be used
to facilitate reflective exercise owing to the
fact that events are chronologically stored.
● One concern according to Thomas et al.
(2018), is the extent to which social media
data presentation can be used to support self-
reflection.
4. Issue 2: Lack of Research which links Reflective
Practice to Constructivism
● Another highlighted issue in relation to reflective
practice is the lack of research which examines the
constructivist approach as the supporting theory of
reflective models such as Schön’s (1983, 1987).
● Kinsella (2006) suggests the constructivist perspective is
a major reinforcement of Donald Schön’s (1983, 1987)
theory of reflective practice and that understanding the
essence of constructivism is required to attain a
deepened understanding of reflective practice.
● Since I entered the field of education, I have adopted
more of a constructivist approach in comparison to other
learning theories, as my experience is a fundamental part
of my learning process.
● I concur with the perspective that the constructivist
approach is a foundational element in the reflective
process given that, reflection is non-existent without
experience.
5. Issue 3: Lack of Online Skills
● In regards to reflective practice in Online
Learning, Huda & Teh (2018) noted the
challenge of professional online skills and
proposed a theoretical framework aimed at
focusing on professional and ethical
concerns using an engaging approach.
● I still have students who ask whether they
could write assessments which require the
use of technology. I assist my students in
gaining the technological skills required to
accomplish the learning objectives.
6. Issue 4: Complexity
● There is also the challenge of the complexity
experienced by educators in facilitating the
development of reflective skills in students.
Based on concluding statements of Benade
(2015) teachers narrowly applied reflection
by limiting the activity to planning and
whether the learning objectives were met.
● There are colleagues who are not
comfortable with transitioning from face-
to-face to online learning. There are
resources and researches which educators
can access to facilitate integrating
reflective practice in instructional design to
help students.
