Lawrence Dick was recently let go from his position as a field manager due to downturn in the upstream exploration market. The author worked with Lawrence on a large, complex offshore exploration survey project in Mozambique. Lawrence successfully managed the project both technically and financially, maintaining tight control over budgets and equipment while ensuring crew safety. He motivated the crew to achieve goals safely by strictly following health, safety, and environmental policies and procedures. The author would recommend Lawrence as a suitable candidate for project manager or QHSE role due to his attention to detail, ability to lead crews, and focus on crew wellbeing and safety.

Due to the downturn in the upstream exploration market in 2015 it was with great sadness that
many of our field managers had to be let go, Lawrence was certainly one of these casualties.
I had the pleasure to work with Lawrence on a number of projects during his career with
WesternGeco. In particular a regional exploration survey that was operating in an extremely remote
area offshore, and extended the length of Mozambique. The project required the usual
management of survey vessels and their crews, but that unique project generated additional
exposure because of the very large distances between the vessels, logistical shore support, and the
availability of medical cover. Risk Management was undoubtedly key to the successful outcome of
the project.
Lawrence was charged with the project management both technical and financial, and the health,
safety and environmental management for the duration of the survey. His attention to detail with
regards to technical and budgetary controls were particularly valid as one of the main requirements
for successful delivery of this survey on time and on budget.
Considerable attention to equipment maintenance regimes stretched and maximized the operating
margins of the hardware while at the same time not exceeding the crew’s safety exposure. At crew
level, tight control was maintained over operational expenditure while the crew juggled with the
logistical resupply challenges, restricted locations, tight import / export restrictions and delayed
resupply of critical equipment.
In the QHSE role, Lawrence has a great ability to motivate, train and lead the crew in order to
achieve our goals safely. He does this by ensuring the management system policies and procedures
are stringently observed while Health & safety, environment and operational risks are fully
documented and reviewed. He contributed significantly in drafting both Project Safety and Medevac
plans for risk management purposes.
The complexity of the operation required considerable dialogue between myself and Lawrence. He
had an underlying desire for the wellbeing of the crew and understood that their personal safety,
morale and wellbeing would result in a more successful operational outcome.
Although Company references are not permitted, personally I would be happy to recommend
Lawrence as a suitable candidate for a Project Manager or in a QHSE role.
