So far we have seen LAN, MAN,WAN, INTERNET &
many more. Here is new concept of REDTACTON
which makes the human body as a communication
network by name HAN (Human Area Network).
 REDTACTON is a Human Area Networking
technology, which is under development, that uses
the surface of the human body as a safe, high speed
network transmission path. It is completely distinct
from wireless and infrared technologies. It uses the
minute(little/small) electric field emitted on the
surface of the human body.

 A transmission path is formed at the moment a part of
the human body comes in contact with a RedTacton
transceiver. Communication is possible using any body
surfaces, such as the hands, fingers, arms, feet, face, legs or
toes. When the physical contact gets separated, the
communication is ended.
 It was developed by Japanese Technology NTT
(Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation) Lab.

HISTORY
 The concept of intra-body communication was first proposed by IBM in

1996.
 This communication mechanism was later evaluated and reported by
several research groups around the world.
All those reported technologies had two limitations.
 The operating range through the body was limited to a few tens
of centimeters.
 The top communication speed was only 40 bit/s!!
• These limitations were overcome by NTT (Nippon Telegraph and

Telephone Corporation) located in Tokyo, Japan by using photonic
electric field sensors and finally in 2005 they came up with a
human area networking technology called ‘REDTACTON’

Mechanism of Communication

7
How it works
It works over the optical properties of an electrooptic crystal which can vary according to the
changes of a weak electric field.

15 December 2013

RAJENDRA DANGWAL, GEHU(BHIMTAL)

8
How it works (Contd.)
Transmitting
transceiver creates a
slight change in the
electric field across the
body.

Electric field is
received by electro
optic sensor in
receiver.

Receiving transceiver
recognizes the
change in the electric
field.
15 December 2013

Electro-optical
crystal uses laser to
convert and read the
signal.

Sensing technology
measures the weak
electric fields
induced.

9
Features of
RedTacton has three main
functional features…

15 December 2013

RAJENDRA DANGWAL, GEHU(BHIMTAL)

10
1.Touch

Touching, gripping, sitting, walking, stepping and
other human movements can be the triggers for
unlocking or locking, starting or stopping
equipment, or obtaining data.

15 December 2013

RAJENDRA DANGWAL, GEHU(BHIMTAL)

11
2.Broadband & Interactive

Interactive communication is possible at a maximum speed of
10Mbps. Because the transmission path is on the surface of the
body, transmission speed does not deteriorate in congested areas
where many people are communicating at the same time.

15 December 2013

RAJENDRA DANGWAL, GEHU(BHIMTAL)

12
3.Any-Media

In addition to the human body, various conductors and
dielectrics can be used as transmission media. Conductors and
dielectrics may also be used in combination

13
Application
 Connect to the network just
by putting laptop on table hence
reduce electric wiring.

 Touch a printer to print screen.

 Identification & verification
of user and locking system.
15 December 2013

RAJENDRA DANGWAL, GEHU(BHIMTAL)

14
Application (contd..)
 Instantaneous private network via
hand shaking.

 Touch advertising and receive
information.

15 December 2013

RAJENDRA DANGWAL, GEHU(BHIMTAL)

15
Advantages
 RedTacton does not require the electrode to be in

direct contact with the skin.

 Can transmit data at a rate higher than that of peer

technologies. (max. of 10Mbps)

 RedTacton transceivers are programmable and we can

decide what to share with whom and what devices you
communicate with.

 Each communication occurs in separate channels.
 Transmission speed does not deteriorate even though

the number of users increases.

15 December 2013

RAJENDRA DANGWAL, GEHU(BHIMTAL)

16
Data loss during transfer is less
Use of minimum amount of power (of some milli volt range)
Security is more.
No problem of hackers . It is very hard to pick

up stray electronic signals radiating from the
body.

More secure than Bluetooth.
Superior than infrared technology & Wi-Fi.
15 December 2013

RAJENDRA DANGWAL, GEHU(BHIMTAL)

17
Disadvantages
 It will be comparatively expensive.
 As it uses electric fields on the surface

of the body ,it may cause harm to the
body.

15 December 2013

RAJENDRA DANGWAL, GEHU(BHIMTAL)

18
Conclusion:
 We conclude that, when we compare

RedTacton with other technology
present today it can give a better
performance over others and to connect
the network with in short distances
RedTacton is best.

 In this technology there is no problem

of hackers as our body is itself a media
Human society is entering an era of
