The rusty red canid lives in coastal Southeast Africa, hunting deer and raccoon in forests, swamps, and coastal prairies. Its population of 50 to 80 is threatened by human development and illegal hunting destroying its habitat. Mothers raise their litters of 4 to 5 pups born each spring until they are mature adults.
