Jianlong Zhou, a researcher at National ICT Australia, wrote a letter recommending Victor Hugo de Freitas Morales for his outstanding performance in a three-month internship program. During his internship, Victor designed and implemented a small-scale experiment on cognitive load measurement using Matlab. He also analyzed time series data from the experiment and achieved impressive results. Jianlong stated that Victor worked hard, learned new skills quickly, and demonstrated creative problem solving abilities during his internship.

This bachelor's thesis explores di erent deep learning techniques to solve the Visual Question-Answering (VQA) task, whose aim is to answer questions about images. We study di erent Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) to extract the visual representation from images: Kernelized-CNN (KCNN), VGG-16 and Residual Networks (ResNet). We also analyze the impact of using pre-computed word embeddings trained in large datasets (GloVe embeddings). Moreover, we examine di erent techniques of joining representations from di erent modalities. This work has been submitted to the second edition Visual Question Answering Challenge, and obtained a 43.48% of accuracy.

We have seen great progress in basic perceptual tasks such as object recognition and detection. However, AI models still fail to match humans in high-level vision tasks due to the lack of capacities for deeper reasoning. Recently the new task of visual question answering (QA) has been proposed to evaluate a model's capacity for deep image understanding. Previous works have established a loose, global association between QA sentences and images. However, many questions and answers, in practice, relate to local regions in the images. We establish a semantic link between textual descriptions and image regions by object-level grounding. It enables a new type of QA with visual answers, in addition to textual answers used in previous work. We study the visual QA tasks in a grounded setting with a large collection of 7W multiple-choice QA pairs. Furthermore, we evaluate human performance and several baseline models on the QA tasks. Finally, we propose a novel LSTM model with spatial attention to tackle the 7W QA tasks.

This thesis studies methods to solve Visual Question-Answering (VQA) tasks with a Deep Learning framework.As a preliminary step, we explore Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks used in Natural Language Processing (NLP) to tackle Question-Answering (text based). We then modify the previous model to accept an image as an input in addition to the question. For this purpose, we explore the VGG-16 and K-CNN convolutional neural networks to extract visual features from the image. These are merged with the word embedding or with a sentence embedding of the question to predict the answer. This work was successfully submitted to the Visual Question Answering Challenge 2016, where it achieved a 53,62\% of accuracy in the test dataset. The developed software has followed the best programming practices and Python code style, providing a consistent baseline in Keras for different configurations.

The Machine's Role in Educating Australians
Open Colleges is one of Australia's oldest and largest providers of online learning. For over 100 years we have been helping people improve their lives through learning. Being an online education organisation, we depend heavily on technology to provide an engaging learning experience for students and a smarter teaching experience for educators. Having over 60,000 concurrent students, all progressing asynchronously has resulted with every student being unique and having different learning patterns and behaviours. This introduces a variety of challenges for our educators and support staff.
Introducing Machine learning & Artificial intelligence into our business is the practical & efficient approach to deal with these challenges at scale. The use cases range from nurturing prospecting students in their course selection; identifying students in need to intervene proactively; Understanding behaviours to drive motivation and engagement; and analysing learning patters to improve quality of courses and services.
In this presentation we’ll talk about how we have addressed these use cases through leveraging scalable machine learning services and suitable big data ecosystem.
