In 2003 Pfizer introduced the Sana la Rana campaign to encourage American Latinos/as to engage in conversation about health issues. I like this campaign because it recognizes differences within the American Latino/a co-culture, and because it capitalizes on some of the unique culture-specific characteristics of American Latinos/as. Ketchum PR was the agency. Sana la Rana won a PRSA Silver Anvil and was recognized in numerous health publications. Not bad for a little green frog and a children’s rhyme. I developed the presentation for classroom use.

This brochure was created for my Public Relation Techniques class at Northwest Missouri State University. It was created as an example of an informational tool to hand out at events to inform people of Agriculture Advocacy, who they were, what they did, and their current campaign.

Legacy Mission Village was founded in 2000 in Nashville, Tennessee by William and Ebraile Mwizerwa, survivors of the Rwandan Genocide, to help refugees resettle in the US and support communities in East Africa. It has partnerships with churches and organizations in Nashville to assist refugees with services like English classes, job training, and connecting with local churches. In Africa, Legacy Mission Village works to restore lives through health, education, and community development programs, including supporting HIV+ families and funding education and health insurance. The organization relies on annual fundraising like newsletters, social media, and events to educate donors and support its mission.

Fresno Economic Opportunities Commission Health Services' mission is to empower low-income families and individuals through resources and counseling to achieve self-sufficiency. It serves low-income and minority populations in Southeast and West Fresno through services like prenatal care, medical exams, STD/HIV testing, family planning, and case management. The clinic actively partners with other organizations and is led by a CEO, program director, medical director, and counselors/educators to provide culturally competent care to the community.

DESCRIPTION
Institutional and social barriers place Latino families in the U.S. at greater risk for adverse health outcomes, often facing unique challenges to healthy sexuality and access to reproductive health care; the services available are often not linguistically or culturally appropriate. To help Latinos navigate the health care system and address their need for culturally relevant health information, Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin (PPWI) utilizes specially trained lay community members as frontline public health advisors. Promotores de Salud have firsthand knowledge of the issues affecting the communities in which they live and serve, and through direct education and training in homes and other familiar venues, become trusted resources. The workshop described the Promotores model and explored how community health advisors can model and teach health literacy skills in underserved communities.
ABOUT THE PRESENTERS
Maria Barker, Multicultural Programs Manager at PPWI, is a bilingual (Spanish/English) community educator of Mexican origin. She has facilitated reproductive health education programming including hundreds of home health parties for the Latino community since 2003. She is well recognized for training and using lay community workers known as Promotores de Salud to reach the Latino community. Maria is a graduate of the Latino Nonprofit Leadership Program through UW-Milwaukee and Cardinal Stritch University, and is a Certified Sexuality Educator by Planned Parenthood of Western Washington and Centralia College.
Al Castro, MS BSSW, Program Director at the United Community Center of Milwaukee, manages the UCC Health Research Department, which collaborates with universities to conduct community-engaged research to develop programs and services that address health issues and inequities in the Latino community. Castro holds a BS in Social Work from Carroll University and an MS in Business Management from Cardinal Stritch University. Castro is a licensed social worker in Wisconsin and is fluent in Spanish.
Angeles Soria Rodriguez, a Mexican immigrant, started her community service by helping co-workers and neighbors access health care, hospitals, courts, DMVs, and other resources. When Angeles moved to Milwaukee, she volunteered at community organizations and attended comprehensive trainings about cardiovascular and mental health, financial management, and nutrition. Angeles now concentrates her volunteer efforts on creating leadership among Latina women and reducing Latino obesity. As a health promoter at PPWI, she uses the Cuidandonos Creceremos mas Sanos curriculum she helped develop to facilitate home health parties that help Latino families get comfortable talking about healthy
Fighting Syphilis in Texas
This document summarizes efforts to fight syphilis in Houston, Texas through public health campaigns. It discusses the formation of a Syphilis Elimination Advisory Council in 2000. From 2007-present, campaigns focused on young African Americans, including the "Don't Sleep On It!" campaign which used edgier images and messaging. Planned Parenthood provides reproductive healthcare and education to millions in the US each year. They operate nearly 800 health centers that serve as the only source of healthcare for many low-income and uninsured people, especially women of color. While most of their services are basic gynecological care like birth control and cancer screenings, they also provide sexual education and advocate for reproductive rights. As the largest provider of these services in the US, Planned Parenthood plays a key role in women's health, especially for underserved groups in Texas like Latinas who face higher rates of unintended pregnancy and cervical cancer.

Among 432 low-income Hispanic women surveyed at an obstetrics clinic in Los Angeles, respondents reported wanting an average of 2.8 sons but only 0.1 daughters. Being older than 30, having less than an eighth grade education, preferring to speak Spanish, having been born outside the US, and coming from a large family were associated with a stronger desire for sons. A multivariate analysis found that preference for Spanish and number of existing children were the strongest predictors of desiring more sons. The findings suggest that family planning programs should acknowledge cultural values like son preference rather than just providing contraceptive access and education.

Overall life span (LS) was 1671.7±1721.6 days and cumulative 5YS reached 62.4%, 10 years – 50.4%, 20 years – 44.6%. 94 LCP lived more than 5 years without cancer (LS=2958.6±1723.6 days), 22 – more than 10 years (LS=5571±1841.8 days). 67 LCP died because of LC (LS=471.9±344 days). AT significantly improved 5YS (68% vs. 53.7%) (P=0.028 by log-rank test). Cox modeling displayed that 5YS of LCP significantly depended on: N0-N12, T3-4, blood cell circuit, cell ratio factors (ratio between cancer cells-CC and blood cells subpopulations), LC cell dynamics, recalcification time, heparin tolerance, prothrombin index, protein, AT, procedure type (P=0.000-0.031). Neural networks, genetic algorithm selection and bootstrap simulation revealed relationships between 5YS and N0-12 (rank=1), thrombocytes/CC (rank=2), segmented neutrophils/CC (3), eosinophils/CC (4), erythrocytes/CC (5), healthy cells/CC (6), lymphocytes/CC (7), stick neutrophils/CC (8), leucocytes/CC (9), monocytes/CC (10). Correct prediction of 5YS was 100% by neural networks computing (error=0.000; area under ROC curve=1.0).

- 2. INTRODUCTION • Based in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, the nonprofit Real Alternatives offers information on alternatives to abortion within a respectful, compassionate, and client-centered network. The organization provides pregnant women with free counseling, adoption referrals, parenting classes, and assistance in acquiring needed food and clothing. Real Alternatives, which reaches out to women in all communities, has a website that provides information in Spanish. According to the American Journal of Public Health, in 2014 the abortion rate among the Latino population in the United States was about 18.1 per 1,000 women of typical childbearing age. That figure is higher than in any non-Latino group, with the exception of African Americans. Experts attribute this figure to factors such as a lack of health care access, financial resources, and insurance. Studies by a variety of community outreach groups show that reaching out to people in the language with which they feel most comfortable can go a long way toward building trust and rapport. As a result, these individuals will feel valued and will be more likely to use the services of those organizations that demonstrate respect for them and their cultural values.
