- The authors’ purpose was to identify the 50 most cited articles in special education journals as well as the trends in these articles
- The author used three of the top special education journals to identify article citations: Exception Children, The Journal of Special Education, and Remedial and Special EducationSince newer articles haven’t been around as long as older articles, McLeskey required older articles to have received more citations than newer articles (2004). He then used the Social Sciences Citation Index (SCCI) to calculate the citation rates.
- McLeskey identified the most commonly cited articles and provided a variety of reasons why some decades represented more articles than others.The most common trends in these articles were “school reform, inclusion, and mainstreaming” and “assessment and classification of students” (McLeskey, 2004).
- This article was very helpful in identifying additional resources. The author provided rationales for the top 10 articles chosen, as well as an appendix with all of the articles and trends listed.
- Identifying themes and influential articles is helpful in narrowing the search for educators. This article’s rationales and brief summaries can get educators a quick look at a body of work so a decision can be made as to whether or not the resource would be of value to them.
