This document summarizes the legal requirements for Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) according to the Education for All Handicapped Children Act and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, and discusses common errors found in IEPs as well as research on improving IEP quality. It concludes that IEPs are legally mandated plans to provide individualized special education services, that procedural errors in developing IEPs often lead to lawsuits, and that proper training is needed to ensure IEPs meet legal standards and serve student needs.
