Reading Reading is the receptive skill in the written mode. It can develop independently of listening
and speaking skills, but often develops along with them, especially in societies with a
highly–developed literary tradition. Reading can help build vocabulary that helps listening
comprehension at the later stages, particularly.
Micro–skills involved in reading. The reader has to: decipher the script. In an alphabetic system or a
syllabary, this means establishing a relationship between sounds and symbols. In a pictograph
system, it means associating the meaning of the words with written symbols. recognize vocabulary.

Do you read every single word? o What kind of assumptions do you make when you read the first
few lines, or a headline? (i.e. Once upon a time....) o How much time do you spend reading the

type of skills they are using in the various reading situations. Divide students into small groups and

Reflection Paper On Reading Skills
From working with Joe for the past few weeks, I noticed there were a few different reading skills
that he could use some practice with. One of the first things I noticed while working with Joe was
his fluency while reading. During the running records I had done with Joe, I was able to listen to
his reading pace, and noticed that he only took pauses when he needed to take a breath. I also
noticed that he used no expression while reading; not even when there was quotation marks
present. Another reading skill that Joe lacked was good use of a decoding strategy. When Joe
was presented with a word he didn't know, he would use picture cues, but when that didn't work,
or when illustrations were minimal, Joe would simply skip over the word. When I asked Joe
what he liked to do when he came across a word he didn't know he said, "I don't know". I got a
similar answer when I asked him if he knew what his teacher, and friends did when they came
across a word they didn't know. This observation showed me that Joe could really benefit from
having a decoding strategy presented to him in a minilesson. On the first day of co–teaching; my
partner and I focused on teaching a decoding strategy, so we could practice that strategy if needed
while doing a fluency exercise the next time we met. Taberski mentions how working with words,
and decoding strategy will help students "move from hesitancy to fluency" (pg 87). Both Alexa and I
thought that our learning partners could benefit from learning

Reflection On My Reading Skills
Reflection Before taking this class I thought that my reading skills were exceptional, but I was
undeniably wrong about that. Now, after taking this class I can say that my reading skills have
greatly improved. I now know how to analyze works of art and find new meanings behind the
words that I read. Now, with the knowledge on how to use criticism to my advantage, all types of
literature will become wide open to me in a sense that I will be able to understand literature in
greater detail. I would certainly say that I learned more in this English class than any other
English class I have taken so far, even though it was online. I even improved on my grammar
throughout the course of these past six weeks. I learned how to write more comprehensive
paragraphs and how to write essays that stay on topic as well. Before taking this class I had not
read too many poems so I was not too familiar with quoting or citing them. Now, I easily know
how to quote a line or stanza without having to look up what to do every time. I would also say that
I am far more appreciative of literature, more than ever poetry. Before this class I did not take
poetry to seriously as I thought it was silly and for the most part nonsense that was being spat off
by crazy writers. Unbeknownst to me I found out quickly just how deep and emotional some
poetry can be. I found out awfully fast that poetry is more than just dilly dally writings and the
nonsense that I believed it was. Of course, being as old as I

There are many means that a teacher can approach reading with students. Teachers lay the foundation
for a students for students' futures when teaching reading skills. Having strong reading skills are a
necessary part of a successful educational program. When these mechanisms come together it permits
the students to become better readers. Students need foundational skills and scaffolding which are
completed in different stages. According to Bonnie B Armbruster, Fran Lehr, and Jean Osborn have
deemed that there is a concise order to proper reading skills which also coincides with a person's
cognitive development. These five stages are the key to proper reading skills for life. "The
evidence is clear: reading is about as good as it gets for the optimal development of children."

Phonemic Awareness
Researcher, Hallie Kay Yopp, had describes the phonemic awareness as a speech flow that a person
makes and a sequence of sound. It is specifically phonemes, the smallest unit of sound that makes a
difference in communication. (1992; pg696). Phenomes are single sounds that when combined
create words. In school and when reading to children we are training them to be able to differentiate

Reading is a basic skill that most people learn while in elementary school; however, it is
disappointing to say that there are still many individuals, including adults, out there who do not
know how to read. Having reading skills can be a huge advantage to help us progress in this illiterate

I also went through a phase in junior high where I bought non–fiction diaries of teenagers that
struggled through different problems. Those always kept me entertained and they were the type
of books that I could never put down. Reading was never something that I just did in school. I did
it whenever we had free time in class, after school, and at night before bed. It was always one of
my hobbies. I also found writing very interesting. I enjoyed writing papers for all of my English
classes. Every one was a little different and every year I truly believe that I became a better writer.
I learned different ways to write and I believe that I always met my teacher's expectations in my
papers. I remember in fifth grade I had to write my first autobiography. That was the only time
until now that I got to write entirely about myself. It's a project that I'll never forget. My teacher
gave us about a month to write this paper and put a book together. The book consisted of my paper
and pictures all glued to construction paper. In that autobiography I wrote about my time growing
up, my family, my friends, my hobbies, etc. My parents still have that book. It was such an

Each person 's life is revolved around developing reading and writing skills, which can include
writing information on job applications, understanding laws, and reading road signs. These skills
are critical to learn at a young age because they help students with academics, affect how quickly

Reading is a basic skill that teachers emphasize early on in a student's education. Some students are
gifted at reading, often times choosing to dive into a good book rather than spend the afternoon

Reading is a skill often taken for granted but it is essential in order to progress in life. For a child
being able to read well helps them learn new things, give ideas and enables use of imagination.
National literacy trust (2015) suggests that children's early language skills can have a major impact

This resource had been created to encourage a child to learn to read through play. It is in the form of
a game and it is aimed at helping a child repeat the words that extra practice is needed from a book
that has been read. The resource created is a game that incorporates play and praise in which are
essential skills to support a child that is learning something new. Games enable all children to
develop skills without pressure and are particularly important for children who may be less
confident (Lindon, 1993). The 'Let's Read' game can be used for a variety of ages as the words
can be changed and personalised depending on the child's reading ability. This game is a good
way of helping to teach a child to read and improve on words that they struggle with because it is
taught by learning through play, therefore the child is less aware they are learning and it is a fun

My Path
A person's strength was always his weakness. When it comes to reading and writing, I have many
strengths and weaknesses. My past writing and reading experiences have made me into the writer
/reader that I today. Strengths help me excel in my read/write, but the weaknesses do bring me in a

When I am writing narratives, I use many different characteristics to describe the characters, and
when I was watching Ted Talks and doing the chart, it made me think about the speaker's features
and how I can use them to describe my characters better. Also, I use my time efficiently I don't
fool around and talk to others. I get right to my work and complete it. I accept writing criticism
very well too, I use it to improve my writing. Another strength that I have in writing is I have
excellent spelling, and I punctuate very well. Likewise in writing, I also have my strengths in
reading. While reading a novel, I can illustrate what is going on in the book or the story in my
mind which helps me understand that story more. It helps me to 'get into' the book. Also, another
strength that I have in reading is that I can annotate and get information out of books very well.
That, coupled with the fact that I am very good at figuring out hidden messages or finding the
theme of the book. Notes I take from the novel help when I am flipping back through the book to
support my theme or message with evidence.
Furthermore, as a writer and reader, I have my goals that I set out to achieve to become better. An
example of a goal that I have for writing is to start adding more evidence in my paragraphs so that
the structures of my paragraphs become more 'juicy.' Another goal I have for my writing is to have

They tend to look up the dictionary to find the word that they do not know. Therefore, the students
spend a lot of time to translate sentence by sentence. Thus, despite all efforts, their reading
comprehension remain poor.
Secondly, the students are not really familiar with the text. In other words, the students just do not
know what to do when they are given a text. They do not know how to find the content or
information from a text. In fact, the students do not know how to answer the question even though
the information has already explained in the text they read. For example, they just completely copy
the sentence in the answer sheet without edit it out because they found the same word as stated in
the sentence in the text and the question. By knowing this fact, it shows that there is a clear
unfamiliarity of students with the text.

  • 3. Reflection Paper On Reading Skills From working with Joe for the past few weeks, I noticed there were a few different reading skills that he could use some practice with. One of the first things I noticed while working with Joe was his fluency while reading. During the running records I had done with Joe, I was able to listen to his reading pace, and noticed that he only took pauses when he needed to take a breath. I also noticed that he used no expression while reading; not even when there was quotation marks present. Another reading skill that Joe lacked was good use of a decoding strategy. When Joe was presented with a word he didn't know, he would use picture cues, but when that didn't work, or when illustrations were minimal, Joe would simply skip over the word. When I asked Joe what he liked to do when he came across a word he didn't know he said, "I don't know". I got a similar answer when I asked him if he knew what his teacher, and friends did when they came across a word they didn't know.   • 4. Reflection On My Reading Skills Reflection Before taking this class I thought that my reading skills were exceptional, but I was undeniably wrong about that. Now, after taking this class I can say that my reading skills have greatly improved. I now know how to analyze works of art and find new meanings behind the words that I read. Now, with the knowledge on how to use criticism to my advantage, all types of literature will become wide open to me in a sense that I will be able to understand literature in greater detail. I would certainly say that I learned more in this English class than any other English class I have taken so far, even though it was online. I even improved on my grammar throughout the course of these past six weeks. I learned how to write more comprehensive paragraphs and how to write essays that stay on topic as well.
