Henry Ford
Nicola Tesla Thomas Edison
R&D was about solving problems with physical,
raw materials
Edison, Tesla and Ford experimented on all kinds of strange
materials like Rhino Skin, hemp, and copper
They used to break things with a hammer just
to see what would happen.
They all created numerous prototypes before
successfully proving their ideas with a breakthrough

R&D Today – Agriculture – Connected, efficient farming
techcrunch.com
• Developing connected farming machinery that creates precise 3-D maps
• Allows for early soil analysis and useful planning in seed planting patterns.
• After planting, drone-driven soil analysis provides data for irrigation
and nitrogen-level management.
11
Self-driven cars
10 million self-driving cars will hit the road by 2020
12
Worldwide R&D spending among the
world’s 1000 largest corporate R&D
spenders increased 0.04 % in
2016 to $680 billion.
R&D spending is huge
By 2018, Healthcare will pass
Computing and Electronics to
become the largest overall industry by
R&D spending.
13
R&D is Shifting
• Most of the world’s major innovators are in the midst
of the same transformational journey.
• R&D is shifting toward developing digital products that
are designed around Software & Services.
• Products are developed with embedded sensors, cloud
based software services, and the ability to connect to
and leverage external data sources.
• Software enabled products create better user
experiences, are more adaptable, and continually
deliver value faster
14
Apple is continuously
investing in R&D
to enlarge its
business and launch
new products.
Big players continuously invest in R&D
15
Ciklum’s
Point of
View
16
• The process is the same - Experiment,
iterate, fail fast and innovate!
• But the possibilities are greater – data is
now one of our raw materials!
• And software’s ability to leverage the data
drives new use cases, value and
innovation!
• Technology is becoming fundamental to all
industries at exponential speed, R&D is the
key to innovation and to developing new
competitive advantages.

48 hours to design the IoT prototype with the Machine Learning capabilities for
the #Garage48 hackathon
Team:
• Machine learning engineer
• Mobile developer
• Cloud developer
• Embedded engineer
• Solution architect
• Scoofy, a smart cocktail mixer prototype
• Speech recognition and natural language processing.
• Speech recognition was implemented to mix your favorite cocktail by saying:
“Scoofy, make my favorite drink!” The device makes your favorite drink based on
your preference and the history.
• Mobile app and cloud app helped connect the IoT machine to the smart server.

How R&D as a Service worked for
Aim: develop a wearable device to help reduce newborn mortality in developing countries.
Functionality: the device monitors baby’s heart rate and blood oxygen saturation, alerts doctors and nurses on changes.
Budget: $ 60K
Duration: 3 months
Result: 40% faster time to market, helped to rise $ 441K

How was a PoC for the Agriculture Remote Positioning
System developed?
https://dzone.com/articles/from-farmers-to-programmers
Aim: create a Proof of Concept that allows farmers to
control various types of vehicles remotely
Functionality: users can collect data from various
sensors, send it to other boards and servers, and
control any actuators using digital, analog and PWM
outputs.
Budget: $ 50 K
Duration: 2 months
Result: PoC proved the idea as feasible without the
need for an army of programmers. The farmer could
program machines in the field to work together.

5 steps to arrive at an innovative solution
to a problem
Empathy
Gather information
through interviews,
observations or first-
hand experience. Keep
an open mind, listen
Define
Narrow down the
amount of obtained
information and
describe the specific
problem you are trying
to solve
Ideate
Work within a limited
time frame, hold a
blue-sky brainstorming
session. Write down all
ideas that come up to
your mind.
Prototype
Use whatever
materials are at hand,
quickly throw together
models of your top
ideas
Test
Ask your end users to
test the prototypes and
gather their feedback.
Then repeat steps 4
and 5
