Mentoring involves a structured, trusting relationship between a young person and caring individual where the mentor offers guidance, support and encouragement to help develop the mentee's competence and character. A mentor provides counsel, friendship and a positive example. Effective mentoring relationships can help mentees reach their potential and prepare them to become leaders by contributing to their growth and the future evolution of their communities. However, many who could benefit from mentoring do not have access to it, leaving a gap that programs seek to address.

All too often parish councils seem to be personality-driven or appear to blunder about in the dark with little information to base their decisions upon. Or worse, there is scant reference to the mission of the parish and whether or not this decision moves the parish closer to fulfilling that mission or leads to “mission drift.”
