2. INTERPRETING THE BRIEF
I started this project by interpreting the brief. This gave me an understanding as to what I had
to create my short film on. Sunderland bright lights are trying to get people involved in short
films, they have stated this is to be done on Sunderland culture and can be entered into
Sunderland short film festival. It is a great opportunity and after looking into Sunderland bright
lights I have realised it has really inspired me. As I have spent time working on this project , I
am thinking about making some more short films , about different subjects, people and more. I
spent some time talking to the public whilst filming and I believe I have inspired them as well.
One male around 36 was talking to me about how he works with cameras and editing within his
small business and stated that he would love to look deeper into Sunderland bright lights as
well as the film festival as it is a hobby of his. I am so happy that people can be brought
together through this.
3. AUDIENCE RESEARCH
Audience research plays a big part in this project. When looking at the brief it states that we are
to target 16–24-year-olds. For me this is a very ideal target audience as i am 18. I know how to
target older audiences as well as younger. I have family around these ages, and I know what
they would be interested in watching from studying them daily. When I was doing my audience
research I investigated some of my peers , their interests and what they would like to see. All
my peers are from the ages of 17- 21. This gave me a clear understanding of this as I combined
it will my knowledge from my family. When I was at home, I asked them these personal
questions and used it to my advantage when working on audience research. Overall, I would
say that I am very happy with my audience research as in previous projects , I have deeply
studied this age group and I can say that in this day in age people tend to project their interests
on social media which I could gain from. As I am 18 the algorisms are somewhat the same, so I
also used my interests as well as an audience profile to help target an audience.
4. IDEA DEVELOPMENT
When reflecting on my idea development I can see that I had quite a strong initial idea. i can
see that I have tried to look at what's best for my audience and what they would like to see in
my short film. When looking now I have clearly changed my ideas a little bit but still stuck to
what I had pencilled down. I really liked how I talked about my audience and what I was going
to do to engage them . Overall, I say that my idea development really shows my inspirations
and who I take my liking from. I have talked about the cinematography and the style that I
would like to film in. I have shown why and how I would do this. I really went into depth about
Sunderland bright lights and what they aim to do and why this has had an impact on what I am
doing. When working with a short film I found it hard to try and include lots of things my
audience would be interested in therefore I believe I had found something that couple
encapsule it all.
5. PRE-PRODUCTION
In my pre- production I really showed the logistical and creative elements of making a short film.
I included all of the forms that gave me the permissions to film. I have clearly showed the path
in which I take when it comes to where I will shoot my scenes. I have written down the exact
dates and times I will film. I also shown what equipment I plan to use. I also wanted to go
around and take some photos of places that would be featuring in my short film. Overall, when
reflecting on my pre-production I have given clear evidence of filming permissions, clear
evidence of equipment and the talent I am using, as well as explaining why I need this. I feel as
though my pre-production is a great follow on from my idea development as it shows an initial
idea and the creative and logistical elements behind that idea.
6. POST -PRODUCTION
My post -production goes hand in hand with my production. Firstly, I talked about all
my editing stages. I showed what I have done and the problems I faced along the way.
Many of my struggles were shown in this to capture all of the ways I have worked
around this and built on it as a form of problem solving. I showed my post -
production diary that includes all the dates and times I was filming over the three days
and what work was done over these days. I captured some shots from behind the
scenes as I also wanted to show what cinematography I was using. Overall, I know that
I have shown what was done in my editing process and highlighted all my work
throughout the journey of this project.
7. FINAL
In my final I have really given detailed slides about my final product. I have talked about what I
have done and why I have done it. This gives a clear understanding of my storyline and how
my short film was produced. I looked deeply into my audience research and correlated how
my work stands out and engages my audience. I then went on into depth on my
experimentation. This goes into how I have completed my work and the challenges I faced
whilst doing it. As many people will know directing and making a short film will not be easy
so I wanted to show how I overcame these struggles and what I gained from this.
Experimentation holds a great part in my explanations as it can highlight my progress
throughout and show off my newly learnt skills. I then finalized my slides with a reflection on
my work , talking about what I have liked about the project and some things I might not have
liked as much.
