Raja Ram Mohan Roy was born in 1772 in West Bengal and was deeply influenced by Hindu and Islamic religious beliefs in his early life through his education. He became a writer, reformer, and founder of the Brahmo Samaj who worked to end practices like sati and promote religious tolerance. Some of his most important publications included translations of Hindu scriptures and founding the first Bengali newspaper called Sambad Kaumudi. He passed away in 1833 after a lifetime of promoting social reform and modernization in India.
