3. Literature is a written or printed work which
expresses feeling, attitude and life of human
of society. According to Wellek and Warren
(1997:94), Literature represent life and life
is a social reallity, even though the natural
world and the inner or subjective world of
the individual have also been objects of
literary imitation

4. Human are created same in God’s eyes, but
sometimes people is separated just because
they are different in skin color. It can be
seen in novel “12 years a slave” when the
family of youngers cannot move on to their
new house in the whites environment
because they are black family.

because the writter found that the main idea
of this novel is about the racial
discrimination among the race in United
States. It can be said that racial
discrimination itself an unequal treatment
based on someone’s race

representation of human life that instruct or

Discrimination is the prejudicial treatment of
an individual based on their membership in a
certain group or category.

slaves toiled in the American South. Modern
scholars have assembled a great deal of
evidience showing that few slaves accepted
their lack of freedom or enjoyed life on the
plantation.

Character is a person portrayed in an artistic
piece, such as a drama or novel that being
involved in the action of the story.

16. Solomon Northup’s 12 years a slave recounts
the author’s life story as a free black man
from the North who was kidnapped and sold
into slavery in the pre Civil War South. The
son of an emancipated slave, Northup was
born free. He lived, worked, and married in
upstate new york, where his family resided.

qualitative research since the data is
collected in form of words not numbers
including some quotations taken from the
novel and other references which are quiet
important related to the topic.
Data collection: In collecting the data, the
writter categorizes to the novel as the
primary source.

primary source such as article, criticism, and
background of the society at that time.
Data analysis: In analyzing the data the writter
applies mimetic approach, since this approach
determines how well a work of literature
conects with the real world and the history.
