The article describes how the teachers transformed their classroom Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) block into an improved approach called R5. They found through assessments that many students were disengaged and lacked reading strategies. The new R5 approach includes structures to make reading more purposeful, focused on comprehension, and metacognitive. It incorporates elements of reading workshop. Students now spend 10-25 minutes reading independently 3 days a week, and engage in follow up activities to support engagement and strategy use. The teachers aimed to make the reading process more visible and support struggling readers through this revised approach.
