1. avenue a|razorfish
Razorfish is an internet advertising and web development company that hired
Gensler to design their new HQ location. Following strong initial success and San Francisco, CA
growth, the company had been acquired by A-Quantive, and just as Gensler was
awarded the project, again by Microsoft. The challenge on the Razorfish project 43,000 sf
was to design a hard-working, dynamic space that facilitated the diversity of their
various "tribes" working styles, and telegraphed their unique work culture - on an
extremely tight budget. The additional layer of the Microsoft design standards and
approval process added significant complexity to the project, as the two compa-
nies operated under distinctly different cultures.
The Gensler design team consisted of Collin Burry, Ian Orlins and me. In my role
as the interior designer, I helped design and deliver the successful project pitch,
developed the Program, led Visioning Sessions, created design concepts and their
visual communication, worked jointly with Ian to create space plans and all CDs,
and was directly responsible for selecting and managing all FF&E, a challenging
role given Microsoft's design standards. I also attended and developed presenta-
tion materials for all client presentations, including the renderings shown in this
presentation. To sum up, I had the unique opportunity to "touch" every aspect of
this project.

The Razorfish project was awarded a Gensler Design Excellence Award, an IIDA
Northern California Chapter Honor Award, and an Interior Design Magazine "Best
new media client.
of Year" Merit Award. But the best reward for our work was that the client was
thrilled with the outcome, stating: "Ultimately the space does a wonderful job of
being functional and practical, while at the same time takes the user on a journey
of unexpected moments and areas of exploration." Success is a happy client.
