The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.
5. #2 ID X and Y.
Mumbai-based company X has sent a legal notice to the producers of the
film UTV Motion Pictures and Ishana Films dated September 10, 2012 for
infringing the copyrights of their registered trademarks without
obtaining a NOC.
Apparently, the lyrics of the title song suggests that X's mother desires to
have a child like ______ _____. According to the notice, the mother dies
as soon as an X product is put on and the child is named so, in her
memory.
Interestingly, the protagonist is named X but he is addressed as Y by all
around him, which is also the name of the movie.
7. #3 ID X, Y, Z, the protagonist and the car.
About 15 minutes into the pilot episode of X, the protagonist leaves a
courthouse and approaches a Cadillac DeVille in the parking lot. The
gleaming, white ride is the same make and model as the one he drives in
Y.
But the action takes place years before the slick ambulance chaser's
fateful first encounter with Z; at this point, he is still so unpolished that
he rehearses closing arguments to an audience of urinals, and he drives a
vehicle to match: a yellow-mustard four-door sedan that egests sooty
refuse out of its muffler and purrs with all the grace of a terminal calico.
The vehicle (pun very much intended by X's producers) is more a
reflection of its owners' unrealized potential, and throughout the pilot,
becomes not only a visual metaphor for him, but a character of its own.
9. #4 ID X, name the movie and the scene.
X is an American film and television production company founded in
1994 by director Bryan Singer. Its productions include the X-Men film
series, and the television series House.
The name is an homage to Steven Spielberg and comes from a line
uttered by Roy Scheider in the 1975 feature Jaws. Martin Brody says to
an elderly swimmer who teases him about not going in the water,”_____
____ ___ ___ _____.”
One of their logos features an animated version of the above scene
whereas another one features the silhouette of an iconic scene from a
movie they produced.
13. #6 Name the protein.
Research scientists at the Osaka Bioscience Institute made a shocking
discovery when researching human vision. Scientists and doctors
worldwide will now need to add a new word to their expansive
vocabulary, particularly those involved with human vision.
It is a protein discovered and named by a group of 18 Japanese research
scientists at the Osaka Bioscience Institute. The protein's function and
properties bear similarity to its namesake , _______.
The protein is used for transmitting signals (electrical impulses) from
the human eyes to the brain. It is also used heavily in the eyes to assist
tracking of moving objects. Without it, these electrical impulses sent
from the eyes to the brain would take around three to four times as
long to reach their destination.
15. #7 What was the point of controversy?
One of the promotional posters for House M.D features Hugh Laurie
wrapped in two snakes with a pair of wings behind him.
The depiction of something in this poster has long been a point of
controversy and satirical humour within the US medical community.
(Image follows)
16.
17. It featured Hugh Laurie wrapped in two snakes with a pair of wings behind him,
a recreation of the Greek Caduceus symbol. Foreign fans might be confused by
this, because the correct symbol is the rod of Asclepius, the healer, a similar
symbol having only one coiled snake and no wings. However, within the US, the
Caduceus is as commonly used as the more correct Rod of Asclepius, as its use
was popularized around the turn of the century. As the Caduceus is actually the
symbol of merchants and thieves, its use has long been a point of controversy
and satirical humor within the US medical community.
18. #8 Name the book and the drink.
The ______ ____, also called ______ ______ is a highball cocktail
drink. The book does not specify ingredients, so there are many
variations, all of which use a large milk base and some have drugs,
such as barbiturates added.
In the book, it is stated one may have it with 'vellocet' (opiate),
'synthemesc' (synthetic mescaline), 'drencrom' (adrenochrome) or other
hallucinogen substances. Minors may be served this drink since it
contains drugs that have not been declared illegal.
The drink's name originates from the Nadsat word for milk. The main
characters in the book prepare for "ultraviolence" by drinking it.
20. #9 X, Y and Z?
The plot revolves around three scary stories told by the X children in the
family's treehouse.
The first segment involves a haunted house that is based on various theatrical
haunted houses, primarily The Amityville Horror and Poltergeist.
In the second segment, Kang and Kodos are introduced when the X are
abducted by aliens.
In the third, Y’s Z is adapted. James Earl Jones guest starred in all three
segments. The episode was received positively, being included on several
critics' "best of" lists.
Critics singled out Z for praise, although X creator was concerned that it
would be seen as pretentious.
22. #10 X and Y?
HBO’s “The Newsroom” signed off with a frustrating combination of sharp
insight and random self-absorption.
Creator Aaron Sorkin naturally got in a few last jabs at the way journalism
is practiced these days, using last week’s death of old-school pillar Charlie
Skinner (Sam Waterston) to remind us how vapid some of the new school
can be.
A classic Sorkin touch, was tapping Daniels’ musical skills for an extended
rendition of X’s Y. Turns out Will once heard Charlie play the song, and by
the end of the show it had been imbued with profound significance,
reminding us all of how we got to wherever we’ve gotten to in life.
24. #11 X and Y?
X’s classic novel Y is displayed on the BlackBerry Torch mobile phone. A
series of features for the phone are demonstrated with a Y theme.
A song by the artist Y is played.
Playing a video, there's a scene from the animated Jimmy Neutron with the
line "Call me Ishmael" which is the opening line from the novel.
The map feature of the phone locates Nantucket, Massachusetts, which is
where the _______ in the novel depart from.
Then a search for Y ensues, using a combination of chats, web searches,
audio recognition, and more.
26. #12 How do we know Bobby Ray Simmons Jr better?
Fill in the blanks.
Bobby Ray Simmons Jr, American rapper and music producer, believes
that the _____ __ ____, according to recent tweets from his account.
He posted dozens of tweets, presenting a variety of arguments as to
why modern science is wrong.
The artist is not alone in this line of thinking. He is following in the
footsteps of the recent trend, among people who believe that the
_____ __ ____. The movement has been gaining ground in the US as of
late.
Neil deGrasse Tyson later joined the conversation and pointed out
inaccuracies in his arguments. But Tyson assured him: “Being five
centuries regressed in your reasoning doesn’t mean we all can’t still
like your music.”

The new lightweight kit combines high performance innovation
with sustainability. Each kit -- jersey and bottoms -- is made out of
an average of 33 recycled plastic bottles.

on the field, according to a statement from Nike.
The ____ ___-___ technology and ____ ___ _________ helps
regulate a player's body temperature through increased venting
and breath ability for players to stay focused on their game.
48. #2 Which company?
Founded in the 17th century and is currently ranked the eighth largest
international conglomerate; exceeding _______, Stagg Industries, and
Ferris Aircraft.
It continues to achieve excellence across a wide range of industry sectors
and markets, employing some 190,000 people in 190 countries. As of 2014,
it has reached an average annual income of over $120 Billion. Forbes
reported the company of having a net worth of $7.2 Billion, with an
estimated sales of $31.3 billion.
The current Chairman is a keen modernizer and continues to grow the
business in the financial sector and in high-end technologies. He maintains
a 51% majority ownership/control of the common stock, as the controlling
stockholder of the company. This allows for the prevention of any hostile
takeover attempts of the company.
49.
50. #3 Put funda.
In June 2015, Alan Stern and his team got a new accessory for their vehicles
which read: ‘My other vehicle is on its way to _____.’
52. #4 Fill in the blanks.
The _________ _______ is a metaphor about the challenges of human
intimacy. It describes a situation in which a group of _________ all seek to
become close to one another in order to share heat during cold weather.
They must remain apart, however, as they cannot avoid hurting one
another with their _____ ______. Though they all share the intention of a
close reciprocal relationship, this may not occur, for reasons they cannot
avoid.
Both Arthur Schopenhauer and Sigmund Freud have used this situation to
describe what they feel is the state of the individual in relation to others
in society. The _________ _______ suggests that despite goodwill, human
intimacy cannot occur without substantial mutual harm, and what results
is cautious behaviour and weak relationships.
58. #7 ID X.
X is a somewhat tongue-in-cheek term for software released
under a very relaxed license. It provides the end user with the
right to use a particular program (or do anything else with the
source code).
Should the user of the product meet the author and consider the
software useful, they are encouraged to either buy the author a
_____ "in return" or _____ one themselves.
62. #9 Which band?
X are an English indie rock band formed in 2007 in Leeds. The band's
unusual sound stems from the fact that due to living in student halls,
where noise had to be kept to a minimum, they were unable to use
bass guitars or bass drums.
They are known as both "Daljit Dhaliwal" and "Films, but were later
forced to change to X because an American band called "The Films"
already existed.
Their current name, comes from a Greek letter which is used as the
mathematical symbol for change. However it’s pronounced X because if
you press X on a ________ you get the symbol.
63.
64. #10 Which document? Who is the author?
Some of the clauses in this document include the Skynet Clause, the
Body Snatchers Clause, the Godzilla Clause among several unnamed
clauses.
The author of this document revamped it to better favor himself. The
new version was only agreed upon by blackmail as he had set up a false,
but realistic-looking one minute timer which would then send an email
to _____'s parents regarding their relationship which they didn't know
about.
65.
66. #11 X and Y?
Born Y Little (and later also known as el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz) in Omaha,
Nebraska, on 19 May 1925, he was the fourth of eight children of the Reverend
Earl Little and his wife, Louise.
In 1941 he moved to Boston to live with his half sister, Ella. He became caught
up in the nightlife of Boston and, later, New York. After a few years in the
underworld of Harlem, selling drugs and working for call-girl services, he began
a burglary ring in Boston. In 1946, at the age of twenty-one, he was arrested for
armed robbery and sent to prison.
Upon his release he changed his name to Y X, the X representing the unknown
name of his African ancestors and their culture that had been lost during
slavery. His commanding stage presence, quick wit, and erudition, combined
with the authenticity of his experience as a street hustler, made Y a remarkable
orator and a dynamic leader.
68. #12 ID X.
It was common in Athenian society for boys to be named after grandfathers
(or fathers). But there is only one inscriptional record of an Aristocles, an
early Archon of Athens in 605/4 BCE. There is no record of a line from
Aristocles to Xs father, Ariston.
However, if X was not named after an ancestor named X (there is no record
of one), then the origin of his renaming as X becomes a conundrum. The
sources of Diogenes account for this fact by claiming that his wrestling
coach, Ariston of Argos, dubbed him _______meaning "broad," on account of
his robust figure or that X derived his name from the breadth of his
eloquence, or else because he was very ) across the forehead.
70. #13 X?
A hobble skirt was a skirt with a narrow enough hem to significantly
impede the wearer's stride, and was a short-lived fashion trend around
the turn of the 19th to the 20th century and the early 1910s.
The name was given in reference to the device used to restrain, or
hobble, horses. A knee-long corset was also used to achieve this effect. A
dress consisting of such skirt was called a hobble dress.
Its resemblance to X is uncanny which is why X is often referred to as the
hobble-skirt design.
(Image follows)
73. #14 X?
It is said that birth of X happened in Britain, where housewives started
protesting against liquor advertisements which provoked their husbands.
The protest rose to a level where liquor advertising had to be banned and
brand owners seeing no way out decided to promote fruit juices and soda
under the brand name.
In India, extensive surveys resulted in similar findings which showed that
liquor ads had direct influence on consumers' purchasing behaviour. Soon
afterwards, the Cable TV Regulation Act banned liquor and cigarette
advertisements; thus, India gradually adopted X.
However, according to the inferences drawn from several surveys and
interviews, 42 out of 50 people can understand the actual liquor or tobacco
product being advertised.
75. #15 Connect. Exhaustive list, but these aren’t all
the elements. Looking for something very specific.
Bounty
Marshall
Bunji
Michael Jordan
Obama
Mandela
Serena
Wendy
Shelly-Ann
958 Bolt
77. #16 ID X and Y.
Bronte EcKermann, the inventor, has said he would not mind giving X
one as a souvenir if his country wins the tournament.
'Well, this is a very costly system. The entire set-up during a match
costs US$ 40,000 (Rs 25 lakh approx), so I don't allow the players to
______ it during any celebrations. But I know X loves keeping a
souvenir _____. If X’s country can win the final, I might get into some
arrangement with X,' EcKermann said.
The innovation was conceived by Bronte EcKermann, an Australian
mechanical industrial designer, and created by South Australian
manufacturer Y International.
81. #18 X Y?
The X Y was a presumed torture device, consisting of an X cabinet with a
hinged front and spike-covered interior, sufficiently tall to enclose a human
being.
It is uniquely a Germanic invention, originated in the town of Nuremberg at
some point in the high-middle ages; probably in the 14th century.
The device is also known in German as the _______ ________ - it looked
very similar to an Egyptian mummy sarcophagus.
(Image follows)
84. #19 What am I talking about?
Color Mood
Green Peace through force, when necessary
Red Evil and power
Blue Justice and protection
Violet Moral ambiguity
85.
86. #20 X?
X is the country code top-level domain for the Bailiwick of
Guernsey, including the islands of Guernsey, Alderney, Sark, Herm,
Jethou and Lihou (plus several uninhabited islands and islets). It is
administered by Island Networks.
A new trend is to use X for domain names relating to e-sports,
where X is a commonly used initialism.
The Search Engine DuckDuckGo uses the domain ddg.X as a
shortened version of duckduckgo.com
88. #21 What’s the good word?
The word X comes from a Nahuatl Indian (Aztec) word “ahuácatl”
meaning testicle. It is thought that the reference is either due to
the X’s shape or the fact that it was considered to possess
aphrodisiac qualities by the Aztecs.
In English, it was first described as an “_______ ____” because of
its ____-like shape. Later it also became known as an
“alligator____” given the alligator-like appearance to the skin. Over
time, the term X became the common word used to describe it in
English.
90. #22 What was the everlasting consequence of this?
Although the devastation caused by the Great Plague between 1665
and 1666 was great, no members of any of the Cambridge Colleges
appeared to have succumbed to it, even in July and August 1666
when mortality caused by the plague was at its highest in
Cambridge.
It has been suggested that most members of Cambridge Colleges left
for their houses in the country which certainly suggests a reason as
to why members of the Colleges were unaffected by the plague.
91. Isaac Newton developed the law of gravitation, calculus, and
three laws of motion at the age of 23 all during the 2 years
that Cambridge was closed due to plague.
92. #23 What phrase?
This popular phrase coined by British holidaymakers in Spain back in the
early 1970's. New to the Iberian peninsula - with no grasp of the
language, and somewhat wary of Spanish hospitality - women especially,
adopted the phrase, as the ultimate, verbal deterrent when warding off
amorous advances.
It is probably the most famous of phrases, of what is known locally,
today as, "Spanglish". Many retired Brits in Spain prefer only to sound
authoritative, rather than expose their inadequate conversational skills
amongst the local community. To use at least one word of Spanish mixed
with English is the end result.
93.
94. #24 Fill in the blanks.
"If Catalonia were independent one day, Barça would still play in the
Spanish league. I have no doubt about it". Sandro Rosell, the FC
Barcelona president, spoke categorically about this issue during a
meeting with businesspeople.
Rosell believes that there is nothing to debate and it would be an
open-and-shut case were such a situation to materialise. Barça
would not break away from Spain's sporting system. "It would play (in
Spain), just like ______ does in ______."

114. #1 Who? What did Sibrel want to get on camera?
On September 9, 2002, he was lured to a Beverly Hills hotel on the
pretext of being interviewed for a Japanese children's television show
on the subject of space.
When he arrived, Bart Sibrel accosted him with a film crew and
demanded he do something.
After a brief confrontation, in which Sibrel called him "a coward and a
liar”, he punched Sibrel in the jaw, which was caught on camera by
Sibrel's film crew.
The police determined that he was provoked and no charges were
filed. He dedicates a chapter to this incident in his autobiography
Magnificent Desolation.
116. #2 What am I talking about?
Twenty years ago, a writer called this the "biggest sex-change
operation in history”
The inheriting natives have brought this transvestite creation the
prestigious status of a world heritage site. A few days ago,
UNESCO, as per the norm that comes with the no-money honour,
dedicated it to all of mankind.
Among the nearly eight hundred such grand sites chosen from all

the honour.
118. #3 Explanation dispelling what common myth?
While the premise makes sense -- that the earth's eastward spin would
cause the _____ in a ______ ____ to spin as well -- in reality, the force
and speed at which the _____ enters and leaves the receptacle is much
