This document discusses the concept of "quiet zones" or "home zones" which are residential streets that are closed to through motor vehicle traffic in order to create safer, less noisy, and more livable spaces for residents. The key benefits of quiet zones include easier and safer movement for pedestrians and cyclists, lower noise and air pollution levels, and increased property values. Several methods for achieving quiet zones are outlined, such as closing roads to through traffic while still allowing access for residents and deliveries. Existing examples from London are provided and the conclusion recommends preventing "rat runs" through residential streets with barriers and restricted entries to limit unnecessary motor vehicle traffic.
