Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learned in the progression
from it to the full product?
Before I started I hadn’t used a
Mac before; I wasn’t able to do
much because all the tools were
new to me. Although Macs are
slightly similar to PCs so I was
able to transfer some skills. My
skills audit showed that I didn’t
know how to do how to do many
things on a Mac, however after all
my products were completely I
was able to proudly say that out
of the 14 things I said I couldn’t
do, I can now do 10 of them.
3. Preliminary task
My preliminary task was to create a new College magazine.
Being a Christian myself I decided make my magazine aimed
at Christian students.
With the few skills I possessed, I attempted to create the front
cover of a magazine. I didn’t find it as hard as I thought I would
find it. When I didn’t know how to do something, I asked Dick
(My Lecturer) and after he showed me the first time it became
natural to me.
5. College magazine
Comparing the two front covers. I think it is clear to see that I learned lot through the
process. I had learned many new skills that enabled me to do things that I would have
wanted to do but would lack the knowledge of how to do them.
The colour contrast and arrangement of the music magazine is much better than the
college magazine, this is because by the time I had finished the college magazine, I had
a better idea of which colours worked well with other colours. This is evident through
the professional look of the music magazine.
I learned about more features that are included on magazine. As was going through the
process evaluating the final college magazine, I began to notice other things that I could
have included; things that were frequently used in other similar magazines. For example
my college magazine didn’t have a QR Code, however my music magazine does
because I had seen other magazines with them.
So overall, I think I have learned a lot of skills that are required to produce successful
magazine pages. I have new understanding of how to construct individual parts of the
Front Cover, Contents Page and Double Page Spread spread of a magazine. I now know
how to utilize the tools I have access to in order to appeal to a chosen target audience.
