2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?Joe Trost
For this question, I have decided to compare my front page models, with models used on front pages on real music magazines in the media.
As you can see in the image, the models posture is always upright and confident, suggesting confidence, except in the red ‘VIBE’ image, where an action shot is featured of the artist playing the guitar.
I feel that the central image on the red ‘VIBE’ cover has a lot of similarities with mine as there is movement in the guitar making the image slightly blurred which relates to the wire which I made slightly blurred to suggest movement.
Both images also contain a musical object in their mise-en-scene.
Excluding the ‘Q’ magazine cover, all of the shot types are medium long shots, which is a shared similarity in my cover too.
My central image is taken at a low angle shot as are all of the central images on real covers shown below. This represents these artists as being iconic and intimidating.
For the lighting, I decided to use balanced lighting as to not create large or excessive shadows contradicting many other magazines below which decide to use more dynamic lighting. Apart from the ‘SPIN’ cover image which also uses softer lighting.
Darker clothes were worn to represent the ideology of presenting the rock genre. This is similar to a lot of the existing covers below.
The price of my music magazine is reasonable, which helps represent the social group of students as students are seen to not have much spare money to spend on luxuries.
My social group of students are a very busy group of people. When looking at my contents you can see that the pages in my magazine are minimal. I purposefully did this as I know this busy social group will not have the time to read any more.
My house colours clearly represent a stereotypical male preference. This has been done as most of my target audience is male. Sans serif fonts have also been used to represent a very direct, masculine feel to my magazine.
The website URL helps represent how involved in technology the social group of students are.
A certain rebellious side of students is represented through the use of edited cracks in the image in my contents page and a cracked effect in my main cover line on my cover page.
My target audience, can also be represented through my cover page central image as the model used is in my target audience range.
