USE OF NARRATIVE
Analysis of my Thriller ‘The
Last Dance’
Evidence from my Thriller
‘The Last Dance’
Comparison to an existing
Thriller product
My film is a psychological thriller that
is about a dancer who is rehearsing for
her upcoming competition. As she is
rehearsing, strange things begin to
happen, suggesting that there is a
sabotage on the case. Throughout the
opening sequence of my thriller film ‘The
Last Dance’, in the titles we have used
an image that is being drawn of the
dancer with charcoal. This image is used
to portray a very sinister feel to our
thriller. As the pace of the music
changes, so does the pressure put on
the charcoal.
This drawing is taken from the thriller film
‘The Black Swan’. This is where we got
the inspiration and ideas of drawing the
dancer during the opening titles.
USE OF NARRATIVE
Analysis of my Thriller ‘The Last
Dance’
Evidence from my Thriller ‘The Last Dance’
Within the narrative of our psychological thriller we
have followed a range of narrative theories. We
have embeded enigma codes throughout the
sequence, by doing this we have followed
Barthes's theory. The symbolic codes that we
have applied make the audience on edge. They are
purposely there to ensure that the audience are
wondering what is happening and who is doing it.
However, in our opening sequence the audience
don’t ever get to see the antagonist sabotaging the
dancer, therefore, by doing this we are going
against our inspirational theme of ‘The Black
Swan’.
In our opening sequence we have also ensured that
there are both Hero and Villain characters which
are the typical conventions of a thriller film, this
also relates to the conventions of Propp’s theory.
For example, in our film we have an Antagonist
and a Protagonist, however, we do not see the
antagonist throughout the sequence, we only ever
get to hear unusual thins happening, which makes
the audience on edge and think that someone is
sabotaging the dancer.

USE OF MISE EN SCENE
Analysis of my Thriller ‘The
Last Dance’
Evidence from my Thriller
‘The Last Dance’
Comparison to an existing
Thriller product
Throughout my thriller opening sequence
of ‘THE LAST DANCE’ the dancer is
being sabotaged, by someone who we do
not actually see. We decided to go against
the typical antagonist conventions,
therefore, instead of showing the
antagonist do these things, we only get
hints and cannot actually see who this
person is. As a group we were inspired by
the film ‘THE BLACK SWAN’, as you can
see, in this film the antagonist is shown.
In the film ‘The Black Swan’ the antagonist
being Nina Portman is shown throughout.
However, in our film the antagonist is not
shown throughout, and we are only getting
hints from what is happening.
USE OF MISE EN SCENE
Analysis of my Thriller ‘The
Last Dance’
Evidence from my Thriller
‘The Last Dance’
Comparison to an existing
Thriller product
As a group we decided to film up in the
Drama Studio. This was because the
studio was easy to access and included
everything that we needed in order to film,
from the sound board, AV screen to the
lighting desk and the area for our
Protagonist to dance in. We also liked the
idea of using the studio as we could vary
the lighting at different times of the
sequence. For example, we were able to
use the dark lighting, surrounding a spot
light to create a tense atmosphere during
the film.
USE OF EDITING
Analysis of my Thriller ‘The
Last Dance’
Evidence from my Thriller
‘The Last Dance’
Comparison to an existing
Thriller product
Our inspiration was taken from the
opening sequence of the film ‘THE
BLACK SWAN’. As a group we all
were really intrigued by the opening
sequence where the dancer is being
drawn. We decided to use this
within our piece and also use it for
when the antagonist rips up the
charcoal drawing to create not only
a tense atmosphere, but another
enigma code.
This will puzzle the audience and as
a consequence they will want to
know what happens.
USE OF SOUND
Analysis of my Thriller ‘The
Last Dance’
Evidence from my Thriller ‘The Last Dance’
Throughout the opening sequence of our
media film ‘THE LAST DANCE’ we
decided to use a music soundtrack of
which we found on the school music
departments website. We chose this
music as it was very suitable for Ellie’s
dance. As a group we thought that the
music made the whole film very dramatic.
The musical soundtrack in the black swan
happens to meet the typical conventions
of a ballet genre, therefore, by using an
upbeat soundtrack in our sequence, we
are going against conventions.
USE OF CAMERA
Analysis of my Thriller ‘The
Last Dance’
Evidence from my Thriller ‘The Last Dance’
Throughout the process of filming ‘THE
LAST DANCE’ we ensured that we took a
variety of different shots of Ellie dancing.
Throughout the film we included medium
shots of Ellie dancing, Close ups of her
feet and hands. One of the most important
shots of the sequence was the extreme
close up shot of Ellie’s face, the reason
behind this shot being the most important
was because within this one particular
shot a lot of emotion and atmosphere is
shown. This shot expresses Ellie’s
feelings just after the door is slammed and
the music is stopped. This creates tension
to the audience.
