ECOSYSTEM
AND FOOD
CHAIN
DAY 1
What are the
two different
groups of
animals?
What can
you say
about the
pictures? Can
you group
them? How?
GROUP
ACTIVITY
GROUP 1
Define an
ecosystem.
GROUP 2
What are the different
kinds of living
organisms? Describe
each.
GROUP 3
What is a food
chain and how
does it work?
An ecosystem is a community
of living things and non-living
things that interact. For
example, trees in rainforest
hold huge amount of water.
The water can evaporate and
fall in other places as rain.
Rain can lower environmental
temperature. Another ecosystem
is the mangrove swamps.
Mangrove swamps is an important
nursery for fishes. The fishes
caught by the fishermen are
replenished by fishes in the
mangroves.
Kinds of Living Organism
1. Producers
-are living things that make their own
food.
-they are also known as autotrophs.
They get energy from the sun.
Plants are the only producer in the
ecosystem.
Kinds of Living Organism
2. Consumers
-are animals that cannot make
their own food. They depend on
plants and other animals for
food. It is also known as
heterotrophs.
Types of Consumers
a. Herbivores - are consumers that eat
only plant. Ex. Cows, Goats, Rabbits
b. Carnivores - are consumers that eat
only meat of other animals
Ex. Snake, Tigers
c. Omnivores - are consumers that eat
both plant and meat. Ex. Dogs, Cats,
Birds, Man
Kinds of Living Organism
3. Decomposers
- are creature organisms that
breaks down organic matter
such as dead animals and plants
- some commonly known
decomposers are bacteria, fungi
and worms.
How can we
protect our
ecosystem?
I learned
that……………

DAY 3 & 4
Interactions among
Living things in Tropical
Rainforest, Coral Reefs,
and Mangrove Swamps
Review on the
lesson about
ecosystem, food
chain and food
web.
The Tropical Rainforest
A tropical rainforest is an
ecosystem that experiences high
average temperatures and a
significant amount of rainfall.
These can be found in areas near
the equator. Different rainforests
have varying animal populations.
The tropical rainforest in Palawan, in
particular, have animals that are
endemic to them such as the Palawan
Peacock. Common animals found in
rainforest, however, are monkeys as
they are adapted to live in trees, with
their large hands and good hand eye
coordination.
Coral Reef Ecosystem- is an
interactive area of coral reef
development containing many
individual reefs and associate
habitats like grass meadows. It
includes the marine life in the sea
and nonliving part of the
ecosystem.
IMPORTANCE OF CORAL REEFS
1.Coral reefs are sometimes called the
“rainforest of the ocean” because many
different plants and animals live in them
and depend on them for shelter and
protection.
2.Coral reefs also regulate the amount of
carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and
the acidity of the ocean.
3. They act as a barrier between the
ocean and the shore. They protect
coastal areas from strong currents
and large waves.
4. Many chemicals from coral reef
organisms can be used to make
medicine and are source of income
for fishermen.
MANGROVE SWAMPS
A mangrove swamp ecosystem has
plants (mostly mangrove) and animals
like crustaceans and migratory birds.
Mangroves are an important part of the
coastal and marine ecosystem that
includes seagrass and coral reefs. A
swamp is a low elevation of fresh,
brackish, or saltwater wetlands that are
dominated by woody plants such as
shrubs or trees.
IMPORTANCE of MANGROVES
- Mangroves serve as breeding or
nesting grounds of different species
- Mangroves are important habitats
of different organisms
- Mangroves act as natural barrier
and flood defense
How are you going to
show your care to the
living organisms in
the environment?
