A patient’s point of view …“The little finger of my right hand had been frozen
immovable at right angles to my palm for 8 years. Following surgery, I began using the WaveFlex CPM
continuously during the day which greatly reduced post surgical pain and most days the need for pain
killers altogether. My occupational therapist was amazed by the speed and extent of my recovery after
just two weeks and I have no doubt I owe my speedy recovery in large part to the WaveFlex CPM.”
Joe Vella 2008
A true original: OrthoAgility® CPM devicesCPM devices
are available for a wide variety of joint rehabilitation, primarily synovial joints (hip, knee, ankle, shoulder,
elbow, and wrist), following surgery or trauma (including fracture, infection, etc.). It began with the first
ever CPM device in 1978, and continues today with the OrthoAgility® line of CPM devices for hand, wrist,
forearm, elbow, shoulder, jaw, great toe, ankle and knee joints—the latest generation of products based
on the original, global-first work of Dr. Robert Salter.
Benefits of Continuous Passive Motion Across the board,
studies show that the use of CPM devices (like those in the OrthoAgility® line) during the first phase
of post-operative rehabilitation provides a variety of benefits: faster healing, less pain, shorter hospital
stays, reduced therapy costs and better end mobility results. Here are a few clinical study snapshots that
illustrate the many benefits of CPM use:
After Postoperative Rehabilitation of Difficult Pediatric Knee
and Elbow Problems: CPM was used to aid postoperative rehab
in 7 difficult pediatric knee and elbow problems. 4 patients had joint
erosion secondary to hemophilic arthropathy and 3 patients had joint
irregularities associated with long-standing limitation of joint movement.
Hemophilia patients did not require postoperative manipulation, had
decreased hospitalization time and gained a greater ROM.
Greene, W.B. - The Use of Continuous Passive Slow Motion in the Postoperative
Rehabilitation of Difficult Pediatric Knee and Elbow Problems; J Ped Orthop.Vol 3, No. 4.
419-423. 1983.
After Internal Fixation of Distal Humerus Fractures: Two patients
with severe intra-articular fractures of the distal humerus were treated
with internal fixation and CPM. CPM aided in achieving 0°-135 of elbow
flexion in one patient and 30°-110° in the other. Both patients had full
pronation and supination and pain free elbows.
Soffer, S.R., Yahiro, M.A. - CPM After Internal Fixation of Distal Humerous Fractures;
Orthopaedic Review.Vol. 19, No. 1, Jan. 1990.
After Surgically Reconstructed Shoulder: The CPM group with
rotator cuff repair, anterior acromioplasty or coracoacromial ligament
excision with bursectomy achieved the ROM goal in 5.7 days vs. 12
days with the non-CPM group. The CPM group that had total shoulder
replacement achieved the ROM goal in 8.9 days vs. 15.2 days with the
non-CPM group.
Craig, E.V. - Continuous Passive Motion in the Rehabilitation of the Surgically Reconstructed
Shoulder: A Preliminary Report; Univ. of Minnesota Hospital.
After Total Knee Arthroplasty: For the average patient undergoing
total knee arthroplasty, CPM is more effective in improving ROM,
decreasing swelling and reducing the need for manipulation than is
conventional therapy and lowers cost. CPM resulted in a net savings of
$6,764 over conventional rehab in achieving these results.
McInnes, J. et al. - A Controlled Evaluation of Continuous Passive Motion in Patients
Undergoing Total Knee Arthroplasty; JAMA.Vol. 268, No. 11.:1423-1428.
After Internal Fixation of Ankle Fractures: Two groups studied. CPM
group took an average of 19 weeks to return to work vs. 29 weeks for
non-CPM.
Davies, S. - Effects of Continuous Passive Movement and Plaster of Paris After Internal
Fixation of Ankle Fractures; Physiother.Vol. 77, No. 8. Aug. 1991.
