1. Q7. Looking back at your preliminary
task, what do you feel you have
learnt in the progression from it to
the full product?
2. Preliminary Magazine Music Magazine One of the main big differences in the magazine is
the quality of the images I have used, as the main
image on the preliminary task is very blurry whilst
the image on my music magazine is of a high
standard of quality and this makes an immediate
difference to the magazine.
Another thing that has been improved in my music
magazine is that the images which I have used are
more organised and have boxes around them so
that they become more defined.
The colour scheme on my music magazine has
improved since my Preliminary task as it was
mostly used by two colours and didn’t look
colourful and attract the eye whilst the music
magazine did this and had a wider colour scheme
which meant that it was more appealing to my
target audience.
Another thing that has improved is that the whole
of my front cover has a theme and all of
the text used for cover lines is the same text which makes it look better rather that it being different text and looking as if it does not fit
together. This is also why for the text I have stuck to 3 main colours as it keeps the theme running throughout the magazine.
My skills have improved on Photoshop as when creating the Preliminary magazine front cover I did not do any editing to the main image
apart from taking the background out. This changed when I was creating my music magazine as I edited the model so that her make-up was
more defined and this meant that it also suited my genre of magazine more.
Researching different front covers made a very big difference in my music magazine as it meant that I had examples to look and get
inspiration from. It also meant that I had for cover lines ect. So I could make them sound more real.
In conclusion I think that my level of skills has developed massively between my Preliminary magazine and my music magazine as I think that
my magazine has moved to a better quality of magazine and looks more professional. This is because the images, layout and titles are all of a
high standard. Therefore I think I was successful in improving my magazine front cover.
3. Preliminary Magazine Music Magazine
I think that my contents page for
my music magazine had
massively improved from my
Prelim. magazine as I had a
better knowledge of
QuarkXPress and knew some of
the basic tool and techniques to
make the contents page., I was
able to easily add images, text
and change setting quite easily.
Another way which my contents
page has improved is the title of
the page, as I have added a box
around my music magazine title
which makes it stand out more
and be bolder, it also looks more
professional than the prelim.
Another thing which has
improved is the content, as there
is less images and more
information on my music
magazine which makes it look
more professional and less like
GCSE media work .
However a thing that has stayed the same in my music magazine which was in my prelim Is the colour scheme, even thought the colour
scheme is not the same on each page I have made sure that I stick to a max. of four colours on both, this makes it look professional.
Another thing which has changed is that I made a silly mistake on my prelim by having the ‘S’ in drop caps at the time this looked okay but
when creating my music magazine I knew that I would not want to do this again as it made it look un-proffessinal.
On both the pre-lim and music magazine contents pages I have used images which are direct mode of address, this is because then the target
audience feel like the people in the images are looking at them and it feels more personal to them.
4. Double page spread.
Even though I didn’t do a pre-lim double page spread I have still managed to improve my skills. One reason for my making my magazine have an
extra page was so that I would be able to fit more information onto my article. This also meant that I was able to have a full page photo on one
of the pages so that the viewer could see what the band looks like, and therefore decide whether or not they like them.
I have put a caption on my image because this is one of the codes and conventions of a music magazine so that the reader would know what is
in the image and it also makes it look quite professional and finished. I have put a white box around my caption so that it stands out against the
image but also makes it easily readable.
I have chosen to use 3 columns for my article as when I looked at existing articles this was an often used number of columns. It also means that
it is easy for the target audience to read. It also means that it fits in with the codes and conventions of a music magazine.
For the title of my article I have made the band name be in bold, bright text so that it stands out for the rest of the text and becomes the most
important text on the page. My heading for my double page spread is big and stretches across the whole two pages because it is the most
important text on the page.
I have made the images of each individual band member just lay over one column this is so that it fits a certain theme and before I had
researched existing magazines I didn’t know that this was important to make it look professional.
5. Overall.
Overall I think that my work has improved massively from my
preliminary task to my music magazine as I have both a better
quality of images and text which made it
Look and sound more professional.
Another thing which I have improved is that I have managed to
keep to more of a set theme, using the same colours, text style ect
to give it a professional look.
So to conclude I think my music magazine was more successful as
seen as I had a set target audience it meant that I would be able to
make the magazine suit them, which it did.
