2. Audience feedback has been a major help for the
creation of our media products, from pre production, all
the way up until evaluating our finished products.
Throughout my coursework I have found that a fresh set
of eyes from a different point of view has been really
helpful to almost make decisions for us, when we were
stuck on multiple ideas. We originally started to get
audience feedback when research the indie genre back
in pre production. As you can see from the screen shot
from the survey analysis, the audience “commented on
their narratives of their videos, while other focused on
how the actors were dressed”. I found this massively
helpful advice as it allowed us to understand what
makes young indie adults love the genre so much. This
quote could be used to show that we stuck to what our
target audience wanted, with our music video having a
loose fun narrative that focused on the bright colours
and the clothes they were wearing.
3. Music video feedback
Once we posted our music video to
Youtube we began to send links to our
friends, so that we could get
feedback. The most common thoughts
was that the rapid editing at the end
of the film was the most popular part
of the video. This was due to they way
they liked how it “recapped” the
video, and how the visuals matched
the music. The mis en scene in the
video was also another big feedback
point for us. These were usually
focused on the colours and the
clothes used and how how the vintage
style of clothes matched the upbeat
indie song. This links with Roland
Barthes pro airetic code due to the
mis en scene reinforcing the narrative
structure.
4. Music video feedback
Although we had mainly positive comments about our music video, I
found that the repeating negative comments tended to be about the
same things. The first that there were a few shots, throughout the
music video that didn’t seem to fit with the rest of the video. These
tended to be in the skateboarding scene. This may be something to do
with the fact that we struggled to get good shots of people skating, as
we could not set the tripod up at a good place, and the shots tended to
be very shaky if the camera was handheld. It also did not help that
none of us were particularly good skaters. If I was to reshoot this, I
would get a few shots of the lower body of the skaters, this would
allow us to have ‘doubles’ who could skate, allowing us to get good,
stable shots without the audience realizing they were different people
5. Music Video Feedback
• Another criticism that we got was to do with how abruptly our video
ended. Looking back in hindsight, the ending does seem very quick
and out of nowhere. This may be something to do with the footage
for our original ending dark, with the lighting in some areas too high
key. Due to this we had to shoot another ending with relatively little
time. If I were to do this again, I would not shoot a sunsetting scene
as the sun is going down. Now knowing we could edit the lighting
levels, hue and colour balance, it would be so much easier if we
recorded during the afternoon.
6. Focus group
feedback
I found the focus group feedback to
be the most helpful out of all the
feedback. This is because our peers
highlighted key theorists work that
we was in our music video. Theorists
work such a Claude Levi Strauss’ and
binary opposites in the opening
shots, as well as Roland Barthes
Hermeneutic code.
7. Audience Feedback
Positives:
Costume & colour
Relationship between visual &
music (mainly recap sequence)
How fun the video was -
relationship between visual & music
Negatives: Lighting in the skateboard
and bowling shots – low key
Certain shots out of focus & too
shaky
8. Ancillary products
Overall from showing my friends I have found that people liked the overall
theme of the advertisement and digipak, however they thought that the
background colour scheme and pattern was too much for the background.
They thought that it not only distracted you from what was on the 2
products, but also the fact that it was difficult to read what the writing said,
especially on the front of the digipak. After taking this in to account, if I were
to do this again, I would use a similar yet much more muted background, so
that the audience would be able to be more attracted to it.
Overall what I have learnt from my audience feedback, is that on the whole
my groups finished product has done what it has set out to do, which is to
attract indie rock fans to our Media products. The negative feedback I have
received are minor changes or improvements that could be made to make
my products that bit better
