Q2: How does your media product
represent particular social group?
Our short film ‘In sheep's clothing’ we focus on two particular social groups, the mentally
insane and justice department.
Mentally insane Police detectives
The insane character is a stereotypical depiction based on
how the media present the mentally insane, on the other
hand he is also a detective who is not aware of his other half
like the famous novel ‘The strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr.
Hyde’. The stereotypical depiction of the mentally insane is,
they are dangerous and unpredictable whilst in our final
piece no direct act of violence it is infer to the audience that
the killing was done by Wick. Also in the first scene wick is
rather unpredictable.
The film ‘Don’t say a word’ also represents the mentally insane
as unstable like our short film, the girl in this film dead silent
and gives of a eerie feeling. We wanted to recreate this in our
work thus when Harvey is acting in the first scene we made
him mute.
Mentally Insane
Police department
The police in our piece are represented through
two characters, Detectives Wick and Smith which
act very different. Wick is a laid back Detective but
take his job seriously whilst Smith feels indifferent
about what happens and can not sympathise with
other people. We used props like police tape and a
tarpaulin to show that they are police officers.
The stereotypical representation of police in
the media is normally negative as a common
stereotype is that they are fat sloppy
doughnut eating, racists. This is predominate
in American media as seen from characters
like ‘The Simpsons’ ‘Officer chief Wiggum’.
People with mental illness have reportedly been falsely prosecuted/targeted
by the police. In some cases, this has resulted in their death.
Challenging the forms and conventions.
Our film challenges this representation in the media by having
a character with mental illness work as a police officer. Mentally
ill people are usually labelled as the evil ones in society, and to
have one as a hero in the piece challenges the media’s view.
Using the forms and conventions.
We used the media stereotype of corrupt law enforcement in
our final piece. This follows the view that society has on law
enforcement. (corrupt.)

Question 2

  • 1. Q2: How does your media product represent particular social group? Our short film ‘In sheep's clothing’ we focus on two particular social groups, the mentally insane and justice department. Mentally insane Police detectives
