This document outlines conventions used in crime genre films that could inform a film plan called Q1 - Plan. It notes conventions like using institutions with white text on black backgrounds, rock soundtracks, guns, chases, low key lighting for villains, simplistic hero vs. villain storylines, the hero triumphing over evil, challenging conventions with an "anti-hero", building enigma with soundtracks and opening sequences, foreign villains, the hero overcoming impossible odds, credits in the bottom left corner, appealing to lower class audiences, showing disequilibrium without resolution in openings, introducing protagonists without detail, and compares to the opening of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

2. • Institutions – white text on a black background, connotes seriousness, conventional as it is
featured in lock, stock and two smoking barrels
• Rock Soundtrack - Conventional of Crime genre (especially if the production is traditionally
British)
• Guns – conventional – shows action sequences
• Chase – a chase is always featured in the narrative of a crime genre film
• Low key lighting for villain – conventional use of misc en scene to portray character types
(Propp’s theory)
• Simplistic storyline – traditional hero vs. villain – conventional of narrative for action genre
• Hero always triumphs over evil – bodyguard is killed
• Challenging conventions of a traditional hero, ‘anti hero’ (often featured in films of the crime
genre)
• Soundtrack before the rock soundtrack builds enigma (conventional of crime genre)
• Villain is often foreign in films of action genre, villain in my production is British, challenges
conventions
• Traditional ideology of hero overcoming impossible odds – conventional of action
• Credits in bottom left corner- conventional of form of a title sequence – featured in most
films
• Main characters made appealing to lower class audience – identification
• Narrative theory – disequilibrium shown – No way of resolving it is featured in the opening
sequence – conventional – sets up narrative for the rest of the film
• Conventions of film form – protagonists are introduced – although not much detail is
established about them – builds enigma
• Could have shown less action sequences in the opening sequence, may have not had the
bodyguard dying at the start – instead could have some enigma building conversation and
just before the bodyguard find them the title is featured
