This document introduces Flask, a Python framework for building web applications. It explains that Flask uses Python decorators to define routes for the web server. Before writing a Flask application, the reader is instructed to install Python, pip, virtualenv, and Flask within a new project directory. The basics of writing a Flask application are then covered, including running the application and defining routes to return responses. The document ends with quiz questions and resources for learning more about Flask.

Composer is a tool for dependency management in PHP. It allows you to declare the libraries your project depends on and it will manage (install/update) them for you.
Productive web applications that run only on the frontendStefan Adolf
Why do we need servers or PaaS or Baas or any Serverless system to run applications anyway? The decentralized filesystem IPFS allows to connect any client (even plain browsers) to a huge swarm and share content between them, effectively avoiding censorship, server outages or reliance on any centralized system. This introductory talk contains some philosophical fundamentals, a very basic introduction to ipfs commands, a short demo on IPNS, a mention of automated deployments on fleek and a demo setup of a simple decentralized, public OrbitDB. All links inside the slide deck.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

2. Framework for building web applications in Python
Hello world
GET https://myfantasticsite.com
Can you give me the homepage
for myfantasticsite.com?
Here you go!
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<body>
<h3>Hello world</h3>
</body>
</html>
The browser (client)
The web application (server)
3. Before writing a Flask application . . .
● Install Python
○ Python comes with a package manager called pip
● Install virtualenv
○ pip install virtualenv
● Create a directory for your web application
○ mkdir hello
● Activate virtualenv inside your application directory
○ python -m venv venv
6. Writing your first Flask application
● Create a file called main.py in your project directory . . .
● . . . and edit it in your favorite text editor
from flask import Flask
app = Flask(__name__)
app.run(debug=True)
7. Running your Flask application
● Run main.py, and visit http://localhost:5000/ in your browser
● Note the /. That’s the route
8. Defining routes
● The web server is running at http://localhost:5000, but you didn’t
tell it what to return when someone visits the / route
● To do that, you have to add a function for the / route
● Flask uses Python decorators to define routes
● There can be any number of routes in your application
11. Quiz time
1. Redefine the / route, so it says Welcome to my fantastic
application!
2. Define a new route that says Hello world
3. Routes don’t have to return only single line strings. Define another
route that returns a proper HTML response that contains the Hello
world text

Editor's Notes
That’s really ALL a web application is doing — taking requests from a client, and giving back appropriate responses
