Psychosexual DevelopmentDanny Kenny, Wilson Ranney, Jesse MaderaBarcelona International College15 March 2011
What is it? Refers to the development of the human personality which occurs in stagesEssentially it centers around the human desire for sexual pleasure; the subsequent achievement of gratification or failure to do so adequately or overly so creates a personality disorder because the person becomes “fixated” on that stageEach stage is considered to be a stepping stone toward “maturity”
Oral StageBirth to 18 months, erogenous zone is the mouthFocused on oral pleasure (suckling), thus the tendency to put things in their mouths. Entirely ID as ego and superego have not yet developed. Weaning can teach independence and delayed gratificationMay smoke, drink, bite nails- manifestations of “fixation”Personality- manipulative, pessimistic or aggressive or gullible, a follower, dependent
Anal Stage18 months – 3 years, erogenous zone is the rectumFocused on the conflict between immediate gratification of defecation and delayed gratification of parent’s approval exemplified by potty training
Anal Stage (cont.)If parents are obsessive- child will be obsessively clean (anal retentive)If parents are lax- child will be messy and lazy (anal expulsive)Parental control must be correct or child will develop either of these two neuroses
Phallic Stage3-6 years, erogenous zone = genitalsChildren become aware of themselves and their sexualityBoys develop Oedipus Complex- competing with father for mother’s (sexual) attention ultimately ending in the development of the masculine characteristics of their father to reduce the threat of a beat down/fear of castration
Phallic Stage (cont.)Girls develop Electra complex (Jung), turn attentions to their father, envy him, eventually develop the characteristics of their mother Result in seductive/aggressive personality, or timid/submissive personality, if not dealt with properlyAccording to this theory, this is the reason girls choose boyfriends with personalities like their fatherDeveloping super-ego because choosing morality over id’s desires
Latency Stage6 years –pubertyFurther development of previous characteristics, essentially a transition stageDelayed gratification- must seek pleasure in school, friends, sportsEgo choosing morally acceptable activities because id has been repressed => playing with members of the same sex
Genital StagePuberty-Death, erogenous zone = genitalsFocusing on members of the opposite sexUsing the ego, not just primal immediate gratification (id) but also development of friendships, relationships, family, and the seeking of love
