Internet and its social media have connected people, communicated ideas, made people aware of issues, events and advancement. You might think that social media are for teenagers and youngsters, but undoubtedly, they bring options in climate change and water issue awareness as well as solution possibilities among the professionals. However, do they really build communities of practice, help knowledge management and transfer and can they truly improve water management? Can they help bridge the communication gap between research, policy and industry? How do they facilitate communication to non-scientists and the wider public?Internet and its social media have connected people, communicated ideas, made people aware of issues, events and advancement. The presentation will discuss the possibilities and glitches based on the presenters’ experience gathered from two EU-funded projects and the WISE-RTD Water Knowledge Portal as well as other social media. The presenter hopes to highlight social media’s upsides and downsides and how they can provide a strong communication channel to scientists, policy makers and implementers, water professionals and the public.

Russian anarchist and anti-war movement in the third year of full-scale warAntti Rautiainen
Anarchist group ANA Regensburg hosted my online-presentation on 16th of May 2024, in which I discussed tactics of anti-war activism in Russia, and reasons why the anti-war movement has not been able to make an impact to change the course of events yet. Cases of anarchists repressed for anti-war activities are presented, as well as strategies of support for political prisoners, and modest successes in supporting their struggles.

is a little like eating spinach:
no one is in principle against it

Public Participation: a definition
• What is public participation?
• ”Public participation is an umbrella term that
describes the activities by which people’s
concerns, needs, interests, and values are
incorporated into decisions and actions on
public matters and issues.”
Nabatchi and Leighninger 2015
14. tekno.dk / @teknodk / Facebook: TeknologiradetDBT / LinkedIn: Fonden Teknologirådet
Why do Public Participation?
• Morally:
• Publics have a right to be involved in decisions and
discussions that affect them
• Instrumentally:
• Public involvement increases the legitimacy of a
process
• Substantially:
• The public holds valuable knowledge, that can improve
the outcome of e.g. innovation processes

2 minute exercise
• Do you agree that the capacity of citizens to
solve problems is more advanced than ever
before? Why, why not? Examples.
• What have been your experience with public
participation?
16. tekno.dk / @teknodk / Facebook: TeknologiradetDBT / LinkedIn: Fonden Teknologirådet
What is good Public Participation?
A process that is:
• Transparent; what is going on and how are decision
made?
• Inclusive; representativeness and according to what
criteria?
• Impact; has a plan for political buy-in
• Adaptive; learn from internal or external responses
• Well-timed; often as early as possible for max impact
• Well-proportioned; what is the best method for your
purpose?
18. tekno.dk / @teknodk / Facebook: TeknologiradetDBT / LinkedIn: Fonden Teknologirådet
Recap
So far we have learned:
• PP is an umbrella term that describes the activities
by which people’s concerns, needs, interests, and
values are incorporated into decisions and actions
on public matters and issues.
• There are moral, instrumental and substantial
rationales for PP
• Good PP is transparent, inclusive, impactful,
adaptive, well-timed and well-proportioned

• Thick: Most powerful, least common. Activates
people in groups.
• Thin: Activates individuals rather than groups.
Before Internet 2.0 surveys today online
participation.
• Conventional: Designed to provide accountability
and transparency.

– High-level Policy Forum
– National dissemination
28. tekno.dk / @teknodk / Facebook: TeknologiradetDBT / LinkedIn: Fonden Teknologirådet
ASSET Public Participation
• Trust in information
– The GPs should be trained to adapt to the changing society, and decision-makers should be urged to be
visible and present at the internet, as the use of the internet is increasing
• Risk Communication
– Build a transparent and clear risk communication to restore trust towards society
• Pregnancy and vaccination
– Update, clarify and standardize influenza vaccination advice materials for pregnant women
• Ethics
– In an emergency situation, public health interests should infringe upon the individual freedom
• Citizens’ voices
– The citizens believe that honesty and transparency can increase the public trust (no matter how bad
the situation is), and that it is their right to know and understand the accurate situation
• Lessons learned and Citizen Participation
– Public health authorities should devote more resources to collect citizen’s input to policies on epidemic
preparedness and response
