Eugene Sandow was the first modern bodybuilder and considered the strongest man in the world in the late 19th century. Born Friedrich Müller in Prussia in 1867, he developed an interest in anatomy and physical training as a student which helped him greatly develop his muscles. After touring Europe demonstrating his strength and muscular physique, he traveled to America in 1894 where he was publicized as "the strongest person in the world." In 1897, Sandow moved to England where he continued promoting physical training and established some of the first gyms. He is considered the father of modern bodybuilding and physical culture.
