Antipsychotic medication may be prescribed to treat psychosis in patients. In the
treatment of psychotic symptoms, antipsychotic drugs may be helpful. Even though the psychotic
symptoms are unsettling, this might make one feel more in charge of their circumstances. The
most usually prescribed medication for schizophrenia is an antipsychotic. Fantasies and
delusions are lessened as a result of using these drugs. Dopamine and serotonin are among the
neurotransmitters that these drugs impact the brain. They may be used to relieve psychosis
quickly in the midst of an incident and to avert episodes in the long term.
Some schizophrenic patients may be very ambitious. They and their psychiatrists may
find themselves in a tense situation. For instance, a patient with schizophrenia may want to
pursue a job that, based on their prior achievements, the psychiatrist believes is out of reach
owing to the patient's shortcomings. Patients with schizophrenia face the danger of worsening
their condition if they follow this ambition. However, failing to do so may lead to a worse
quality of life since they cannot fulfill a long-held ambition. Such a patient presents a
problematic situation for a psychiatrist. The mental health professional could be concerned that
the patient's audacious quest for a specific goal will exacerbate the patient's schizophrenia. Still,
the psychiatrist must improve health outcomes regardless of this concern to support the patient's
optimism that this heightened threat will enhance the patient's quality of care. This is when the
patient's desires should be given more consideration, not less, by the psychiatrist.
Recurrent psychosis patients and their families should be encouraged by their doctors to
develop a contingency plan for dealing with future episodes. "Scenario planning" should be
included in continuous treatment for patients, families, and doctors, regardless of whether or not
they have a formal psychiatric advance directive. Consequently, an ethical challenge arose over
whether or not the denial of medicine by the proxy decision-maker may be overridden.
Overriding a patient's reluctance to take treatment may be morally justified in some instances.
