History of UK Underground Folk Rock - Vol. 1-
2
You can think of this as sort of an equivalent to specialty series like Nuggets,

Rubble, and Pebbles that unearthed very obscure 1960s rock, the difference
being that this focuses on British folk-rock of the late '60s and '70s. Although
artists like Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span, the Incredible String Band, and
Pentangle are fairly popular and well-known, there have been very few discs
dedicated to excavation of other bands working along the same lines that never
got anywhere (commercially that is). This CD is compiled from rare albums,
along with presenting previously unavailable songs by the Trees, Tir Na Nog,
Mellow Candle, and Harison. Now, when the Trees and Mellow Candle are by far
the most recognizable names on the track listing, you know this is digging deep.
Note, however, that unlike many anthologies of obscure genre music -- for
whatever genre -- the quality on this and Vol. 2 of this series is pretty high, and
virtually guaranteed to appeal to fans of classic British folk-rock in the
Fairport/Steeleye/Incredibles mold. Whether high female vocals in the Sandy
Denny/Jacqui McShee style or fairly exotic acoustic-based folk-psych is your
bag, there's a lot of it here.

Far East Family Band - Nipponjin
The definitive Japanese space rock band, originally called "Far Out". It's pretty
safe to say Nipponjin was to Far East Family Band what Photos of Ghosts was to
PFM. That meant the band was trying to break in to the international market,
which they did by having the album released on Vertigo in Germany. For
Nipponjin, they decided to use Klaus Schulze to produce and mix the album and
re-record most of it in English. Also, Kitaro, venerable new age artist had his
start here.

Impala Syndrome - Impala Syndrome
Originally from Venezuela, where they were known as Los Impala, this group
relocated to Madrid, Spain in 1965. After a few months, their singer Henry
Stephens left to pursue a solo career, recording an EP as Lord Henry Con Los
Impala.
After a few years the band moved to Chicago, releasing their Impala Syndrome
album which is well worth checking out. An effective blend of melodic, laid
back songs (Love Grows A Flower, Land Of No Time and the superb Eastern-
influenced finale, Run (Don't Look Behind)) combined with fuzz guitar numbers
like Too Much Time and Let Them Try. New Love Time is also rather catchy but
Leave, Eve sounds unashamedly like The Rascals' Its Wonderful.

Never Ever Land - 83 Texan Nuggets from
International Artists Records 1965-1970
International Artists (IA) was an independent record label based in Houston,
Texas that existed from 1965 to 1970. During its existence IA released 13 albums
and 39 singles and passed through the hands of several owners, including Lelan
Rogers, brother of country singer Kenny Rogers. The label is infamous for its
roster of well-known Texas psychedelic rock bands, including The 13th Floor
Elevators, The Red Crayola and Bubble Puppy, as well as lesser known bands
such as The Golden Dawn, Lost And Found and Endle St. Cloud. International
Artists also released an album by blues guitarist Lightnin' Hopkins that featured
session work by the 13th Floor Elevators' rhythm section.
In 1980 the double-LP Epitaph for a Legend reissued rare International Artists
tracks from Roky Erickson's first band, The Spades, early demos by the Red
Krayola, and forgotten relics from other Texas blues and psychedelic artists.

The Hombres - Let It Out
The Hombres were a Memphis, Tennessee band that formed in 1966 with Gary
Wayne McEwen on guitar, B.B. Cunningham on the electric organ (brother of Bill
Cunningham of The Box Tops), Jerry Lee Masters on bass and John Will Hunter
(died 1976) on the drums.
The Hombres' "Let It Out (Let It All Hang Out)" is included on the soundtrack of
the Cameron Crowe film, Elizabethtown. It has also been used in an advertising
campaign for Foster's Lager.
The origin of the other bizarre lyrics in this song is presumably from the
songwriters, but the spoken introduction – "I preach, my dear friends, you are
about to receive on John Barleycorn, nicotine and the temptations of Eve" – goes
all the way back to 1947, when they served to introduce a song that was every
bit as strange for its era as this one was in 1967: "Cigareetes, Whusky and Wild
Wild Women" by Red Ingle and His Natural Seven.
