PSALM 51- THERE IS
HOPE!
PSALM 51- THERE IS
HOPE!
According to your unfailing love, according
to your great compassion, blot out my
transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity
and cleanse me from my sin.
PSALM 51 REPENTANCE
•It is a complete turn-around from
going our own way, agreeing with
God, and going his way.
•We all have the capacity to sin.
PSALM 51 : 3,4
DAVID’S CONFESSION
•Honest with himself and honest
with God.
•I am wrong and God is right.
•Woe is me…
•Depart from me…
•God be merciful to me…
PSALM 51: 17
DAVID’S CONTRITION
• The sacrifices of God are a broken and contrite
spirit. A broken and a contrite heart, O God,
you will not despise.
• An indication of a genuine repentance.
• A feeling of deep sorrow for what has been
done.
PSALM 51: 17
DAVID’S CONTRITION
• To be bowed down with an awareness of our
poor spiritual state.
• To have our inner spirit crushed with a sense
of guilt.
• To have a genuine and deep sorrow for our
rebellion against God AND a determined
desire to do differently.
PSALM 51 : 7,9,10
DAVID’S CLEANSING
•Cleanse me – literally ‘un-sin me’.
•Blot out – not blot covered up – blot
out!
•Create in me a pure heart, O God, and
renew a steadfast spirit within me.
DAVID KNEW
• He knew that “every inclination of the thoughts
of man’s heart was only evil all the time.”
Genesis 6:5
• He knew that “The heart is deceitful above all
things and beyond cure.” Jeremiah 17:9
• And he knew that only God could achieve this
change within him.
Create in me a pure heart. O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within
me. Do not cast me from your
presence or take your Holy Spirit
from me. Restore to me to joy of
your salvation and grant me a willing
spirit to sustain me.
