Healing on the wrong day

John 5:1-18 The Healing The Controversy
THE HEALING  When the water was troubled…….  First in healed…….  He had no chance but still he came.
THE HEALING Hope faded? Disappointment? Depression? Then Jesus came!
THE HEALING  Do you want to get well?  He looked at Jesus instead of the pool.  He looked at the solution rather than the problem.  He did what Jesus said.
THE CONTROVERSY  No carrying sleeping mats on the Sabbath!  Not one of the Ten Commands but one of the Rabbis rules!  The letter of the law v. the spirit of the law.
THE CONTROVERSY A threat to their power and control and to the status quo.  God did not say, “I am the Lord who heals you, but not on a Sabbath”  See also Matthew 12 – the healing of the man with a withered hand.
THE CONTROVERSY  They said: “This man is not from God.”  Jesus said: These people honour me with their lips but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men. Mark 7: 6,7  Paul said: But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless.
LEGALISTIC OR LIBERAL OR......  Understand the nature of God, the heart of God.  Walk closely with God.  The letter of the law would have had this man still bound by his infirmity.  The spirit of the law set him free.  If the Son sets you free you shall be free indeed.
THE PRIESTLY BLESSING  The Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron and his sons, ‘This is how you are to bless the Israelites. Say to them:’’’  The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace. Numbers Chapter 6
