Proxima hip replacement is a bone preserving procedure where only the head of the femur is removed, preserving the neck and shaft of the femur. It has several advantages over traditional total hip replacements including less soft tissue dissection, bone resection, faster recovery, and better function due to the larger diameter head which reduces dislocation risk. Proxima hips use a metal on metal bearing which may provide longer implant survivorship through fluid film lubrication and less wear compared to traditional polyethylene bearings. They are best for patients who need hip replacement but would benefit from preserving more bone stock.
