Proposal
1. Passiflora as an Alternative Treatment for Insomnia Cristina M. Cruz RISE Program Proposal
2.
3.
4. Goal To demonstrate that the usage of Passiflora to treat Insomnia is effective.
5. Objective This research will determine under which circumstances Passiflora is more effective on the treatment of Insomnia.
6. Methodology Animal used: Mice (Mus Musculus Swiss) Why are mice used? It is more reasonable to do experiments on mice than with humans. The homology of mice is closely related to humans. Most mice are genetically similar.
7. Stress Induction Mice will be expose to cold water for 2 hours before each dose of Passiflora.
9. Specifications Six groups of seven mice each will be used. First group: negative control Second group: positive control (Benzodiazepine) Third group will be given a dose of 6Omg of Passiflora extract for one week. Fourth group will be given a dose of 6Omg of Passiflora extract for two weeks. Fifth group will be given a dose of 300mg for a week. Sixth group will be given a dose of 300mg for two weeks.
10. Why was this particular methodology chosen? There is not enough research in the use of Passiflora on insomnia. Previous investigations tested for how long the mice were sleeping after Passiflora was given. Persistency and compliance are two factors that are relevant when testing the efficiency of any drug, this demonstrates the effects of Passiflora given for a determined period of time.
11.
12. The time of sleep and the time of awake of each mice will be recorded, this will provide how long each mice was as sleep.
15. Research Dissemination An explanation about the methodology and the results obtained on the research will be presented to the Science Department Faculty and fellow students. A brochure will be given to the Science Department Faculty and fellow students. The explanation of the results and the results will be exposed at the bulleting board of the Science Department. The explanation of the results and the results will be showed at my blog (wordpress.com) and the internet page of the University of Cayey.
16. Expected Results That the time of sleep of mice will be around the same during the first week of treatment. By the second week of treatment an increment of sleep time will be shown. Between the 60 mg/kg treatment and the 300 mg/kg treatment the second treatment shows more sleep time in mice.
17. Cont. Comparing the effectiveness of Benzodiazepine and Passiflora it is expected that Benzodiazepine will be addictive to mice and Passiflora won’t.
18. Unexpected results If the results are not what is expected further research must be done to fine if increasing the doses will help to increase the sleep time in mice. Combining Passiflora with other drugs that have sedative agent will increment the time of sleep in mice.
19. Future Studies If the results are what is expected, further research should be done with humans.
