comes from the
word “associate” that
means to group the
numbers together .
Associative Property of Addition

Tells us that the digits or
numbers are group
differently. BUT… The
answer is the same!

To show groupings
in MATH, we use
PARENTHESIS ( ).

Always solve the
numbers inside the
parenthesis FIRST!

(A + B)+ C = A + (B + C)

(3+5) + 8 = 3+(5 + 8)

(3+5) + 8 = 3+(5 + 8)

Identity Property of Addition

Think of a number that
when added to a number
it will not change its
value.

Zero is the only number you
can add to any number and you
will see no changes.

Tells us that even if you
add a zero to any number,
the sum is that number or
it will not change its value.

9 + 0 = 9
19 + 0 =19

1 000 + 0 = ?

1 000 + 0 = 1 000

Directions: Write CP if it is
