ENTERING
The
PROMISED LAND
• Throughout the 40 years of traveling the Israelites
showed a lack of faith in God
• Even Moses had moments when his faith was weak
• Because of this, Moses would not enter the
Promised Land
• Upon entering Moab, a land not far from Canaan,
Moses told the Israelites that he was near death
and reminded them of all God had done for them
• Moses appointed Joshua to lead the people into
Canaan, and gave a blessing to each of the 12 tribes
• Moses went up Mount Nebo, where God showed
him Canaan, the Promised Land
- “This is the land that I swore to Abraham, Isaac
and Jacob for their descendents…”
• Moses died on Mount Nebo; he was mourned by
the Israelites, and is still remembered as a great
prophet today
• Joshua became the leader of the Israelites. Moses
had laid his hands on Joshua, an ancient gesture
of blessing
• The name Joshua is the Hebrew name for Jesus
• This name means “God saves”
• Joshua led the people to the banks of the Jordan
river
• Priests carried the Ark of the Covenant across the
river
• There were people living in Canaan; they would
not easily give up the land that had been
promised to the Israelites
• The Israelites marched around the walled city of
Jericho for seven days.
• On the seventh day, Joshua commanded the
people to shout out; the walls collapsed and the
Israelites stormed the city
• Under Joshua’s command, all the cities of Canaan
were conquered
• A tent was set up in Shiloh to house the Ark of the
Covenant
• This became the place of worship, and was a
reminder of God’s presence among them
• Joshua divided the land among the Tribes of Israel
• Before he died, Joshua again reminded the
people of all that God had done for them
• The people vowed service to the Lord and
obedience to His voice
