Introduction to the Book of Joshua:
• Sixth book of the Bible – between Pentateuch and the Historical Books.
• It points backward to the exodus and forward to the time of the judges.
• Named for and written by Joshua, Moses’ successor.
• Central character of the book is God, not Joshua.
• Describes Israel’s response to God’s covenant promise.
Introduction to the man named Joshua:
• A one word description for Joshua is “Warrior”.
• Born in Egypt during Israel’s enslavement.
• Was in his 40’s when left Egypt in Israel’s Exodus in 1446 BC.
• Family tribe of Ephraim.
• He was 80+ when he took over after Moses’ death.
Exodus 17:8-10, 13 ESV (Joshua first introduced)
8 Then Amalek came and fought with Israel at Rephidim. 9 So Moses said to
Joshua, "Choose for us men, and go out and fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will
stand on the top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand." 10 So Joshua did as
Moses told him, and fought with Amalek, while Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up
to the top of the hill.
13 And Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the sword.

Exodus 17:14 ESV (Writing it all down)
14 Then the Lord said to Moses, "Write this as a memorial in a book and recite it in
the ears of Joshua, that I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under
heaven."
• God instructs Moses to write a book and make sure that Joshua
continually hears these words.
Exodus 24:12-13 ESV (Joshua present with Moses)
12 The Lord said to Moses, "Come up to me on the mountain and wait there, that I
may give you the tablets of stone, with the law and the commandment, which I
have written for their instruction." 13 So Moses rose with his assistant Joshua, and
Moses went up into the mountain of God.
• Joshua was close by when God gave Moses the Ten Commandments.
Exodus 33:7, 11 ESV (The Tent of Meeting of Moses)
7 Now Moses used to take the tent and pitch it outside the camp, far off from the
camp, and he called it the tent of meeting. And everyone who sought the Lord
would go out to the tent of meeting, which was outside the camp.
11 Thus the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his
friend. When Moses turned again into the camp, his assistant Joshua the son of
Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent.
Numbers 13:1-2, 8, 16 ESV (Selecting Scouts & Name Change)
1 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 "Send men to spy out the land of Canaan,
which I am giving to the people of Israel. From each tribe of their fathers you
shall send a man, every one a chief among them."
8 from the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun;
16 These were the names of the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land. And
Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua.
Moses changes Hoshea’s name to Joshua.
• Hoshea means “desire for salvation” or “salvation” used 3 times in
Pentateuch.
• Joshua means “the Lord is salvation” or “Yahweh saves” used 27 times in
Pentateuch.
• Why the name change?
• To establish a new identity & mission for Joshua.

How does Joshua relate to Jesus’ name?
• Jesus in Greek means “Jehovah is salvation”.
• Joshua in Hebrew means “Jehovah is salvation”.
• Joshua is often referred to as a “type or shadow of Jesus in the Old
Testament”.
Joshua as a “type or shadow” of Jesus:
• Joshua led God’s chosen people into the Promised Land to claim it and
rule.
• Jesus will return to God’s land with His people (church) to claim it and rule
during the Millennium.
Deuteronomy 31:7-8 ESV (Moses charges Joshua)
7 Then Moses summoned Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, "Be
strong and courageous, for you shall go with this people into the land that the
Lord has sworn to their fathers to give them, and you shall put them in possession
of it. 8 It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave
you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed."
Deuteronomy 31:14-15 ESV (God commissions Joshua)
14 And the Lord said to Moses, "Behold, the days approach when you must die.
Call Joshua and present yourselves in the tent of meeting, that I may
commission him." And Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves in the
tent of meeting. 15 And the Lord appeared in the tent in a pillar of cloud. And the
pillar of cloud stood over the entrance of the tent.

23 And the Lord commissioned Joshua the son of Nun and said, "Be strong and
courageous, for you shall bring the people of Israel into the land that I swore to
give them. I will be with you."

1 After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, the Lord said to Joshua the son
of Nun, Moses ' assistant, 2 "Moses my servant is dead. Now therefore arise, go
over this Jordan, you and all this people, into the land that I am giving to them,

have given to you, just as I promised to Moses.

4 From the wilderness and this Lebanon as far as the great river, the river

5 No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just as I was
with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you or forsake you. 6 Be strong
and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit the land that I swore
to their fathers to give them. 7 Only be strong and very courageous, being
careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you.
Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good
success wherever you go.
• The condition for success: “Follow the written directions.”
Joshua 1:8-9 ESV
8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate
on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is
written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have
good success. 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not
be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you
wherever you go."
“This Book of the Law”
• Joshua was the first leader to have a Book as the foundation of guidance.
• Moses was guided by oral directives from God.
• Joshua was to use the Book of the Law written by Moses as his guide.
• The Book (Torah) was, actually, a continuous scroll.
• It was kept at the side of the ark of the covenant.
The key to prosperity and success:
Joshua 1:8 ESV
8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate
on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is
written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have
good success.
• How do you follow the Word?
• By meditating on it day and night.
Spiritually what does it mean to enter “Enter the Promised Land?”
• Promised Land is not a place of rest like heaven.
• It is not an idiom for heaven.
• It was battles to fight and lands to claim.
• They were commanded to “Be strong and courageous!”

Life presents many situations when you must take a step forward in faith with
“strength and courage.”
• Going off to college.
• Getting married.
• Career choices.
• Family and children decisions.
• Changes in life and stages of life.
• Just everyday Christian living is a challenge.
The Christian’s perspective on daily living and the daily struggle.
• Daily living as a Christian is participating in a war you cannot lose – Jesus
has won it for you already!
• You may lose a few battles in the war, but the victory of the war has
already been won by Jesus!
• The Christian is operating from a position of strength!
How do you have strength for the battles in life?
• The Book of Joshua and the Letter of Paul to the Ephesians are considered
spiritual parallels.
• Joshua is about the physical battle of God’s people with enemies
possessing their promised land.
• Ephesians is about the spiritual battle of the church and believers in Christ
with the spiritual enemy Satan.
The Strength You Need

• Seven Truths in Ephesians 3:16-21.
1. God strengthens us with power through his spirit.
Ephesians 3:16 NIV
16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power
through his Spirit in your inner being,
• Power = dynamis (Greek) occurs 119 times in NT.
• Means you have might, strength, ability, and authority.
• The Holy Spirit provides the strength we need for whatever God assigns
us for that day.

Scripture Examples of Power:
Acts 1:8 ESV
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and
you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and
to the end of the earth.”
Romans 15:13 ESV
13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that
by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.
What is the result of living life on your own power and not the power of the
Holy Spirit?
• Burnout – spiritually, physically and mentally.
1 John 4:4 ESV
4 Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is
in you is greater than he who is in the world.
• Notice scripture does not say you are greater (stronger) but he who is
in you (Holy Spirit) is greater!
• Burn out is trying to battle life in your own power.
Is this you?
2. He strengthens us out of his glorious riches.
Ephesians 3:16 (Phillips Translation)
16 I pray that out of the glorious richness of His resources He will enable you
to know the strength of the Spirit’s inner reinforcement.
Ephesians 1:3 NIV
3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ who has blessed
us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.
• God allots us strength out of His boundless riches.

3. He strengthens us in our inner being.
Ephesians 3:16 ESV
16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be
strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being,
• God created us with an inner spirit, an inmost being, which is eternal.
• This is where God places the power of his Spirit for you to have strength
you need.
Scriptures about our inner being:
Psalm 103:1 ESV
1 Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and all that is within me,
bless his holy name!
Hebrews 4:12 ESV
12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged
sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow,
and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
4. He strengthens us so Christ will dwell in our hearts through faith.
Ephesians 3:17a ESV
17a so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith
• Dwell means that Christ is at home in your heart.
• Jesus lives in the hearts of His children.
• Your trust (faith) is placed in Jesus.
5. He strengthens us to comprehend His love.
Ephesians 3:17b-19 ESV
17b —that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may have strength to
comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height
and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge,
that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
Dimensions of God’s love (Limitless):
• Width – Christ’s outstretched arms on the cross.
• Length – Everlasting that reaches back to the past and covers today
and reaches in to the future.
• Height – It goes beyond the stars and heavens.
• Depth – Deep enough to reach down into the depths of our sins and
grief and pull us out.

6. He strengthens us to be filled with His fullness.
Ephesians 3:19 ESV
19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may
be filled with all the fullness of God.
• Fullness implies satisfaction, peace and contentment.
• Fullness is knowing the love of Christ.
• Being filled with the fullness of God is not about what you do, but knowing
how much God loves you.
7. To Him be glory forever.
Ephesians 3:20-21 ESV
20 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask
or think, according to the power at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the
church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever.
Amen.
• Those who know Christ are the richest and the strongest people on
earth.
Closing Comments:
• The principals of Joshua 1:7 to do all that has been instructed by God
mean that obedience to God’s Word is paramount for successful Christian
living.
• Joshua 1:9 still applies today – “the Lord your God is with you wherever
you go.”
