This document summarizes the development of a web application to manage the inventory of network switches at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Previously, inventory was tracked using spreadsheets, which was time-consuming and inaccurate. Nicholas Franco and Bill Eisele decided to create a web application using Perl to more efficiently monitor the network switch inventory. The author designed web forms according to specifications and wrote Perl code to compile the forms and interface with a MySQL database. After 2 months of development, the web application was completed and is being used to track hundreds of network switches. Ongoing maintenance and updates to the database will be required to keep the inventory accurate.
