From programming to software engineering: ICSE keynote slides availableCelso Martins
Meyer's blog:
"In response to many requests, I have made available [1] the slides of my education keynote at ICSE earlier this month. The theme was “From programming to software engineering: notes of an accidental teacher”. Some of the material has been presented before, notably at the Informatics Education Europe conference in Venice in 2009. (In research you can give a new talk every month, but in education things move at a more senatorial pace.) Still, part of the content is new. The talk is a summary of my experience teaching programming and software engineering at ETH."
Development of a Distributed Stream Processing System (DSPS) in node.js and ZeroMQ and demonstration of an application of trending topics with a dataset from Twitter.
From historical mapping to mobile 3D augmented reality, this presentation takes a look at data management developments relevant to the Environment industry.

Usability Challenges in Cutting-edge Medical Devices and Exoskeleton RoboticsICS
As medical device and robotics technology mature and grow more capable they also become more complex, requiring focus on usability aspects from both a user experience (UX) design and regulatory perspective. These new applications, such as exoskeletons, demand a seamless interaction between the device and the user. That means designers and developers must improve utility while mitigating inherent risks.
This online panel will explore how to approach UX design for medtech and how it should plug into a product development cycle leading to a 510(k) submission. We will share lessons learned from studying exoskeletons for military applications, and explain how they can be applied to medical/rehabilitative applications.
Rethinking Learning for the Digital Generation - Better, Faster, CheaperJulie Cunningham
Presented to the ALPMA (SA Branch) in July 2014
“The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn” - Alvin Tofler
Many organisations face a similar dilemma - linking learning to organisational performance. Advancements in mobile technology and adaptive learning platforms can change this and offer organizations insight they currently lack.
In this session we will explore some of the benefits of shifting the weighting from its traditional skew towards ‘learning’ to focus as needed on ‘unlearning’ and ‘relearning’.
The future of learning is exciting and full of opportunity – and for organisations who want to thrive into the future, disruptive thinking in this area can create significant competitive advantage.
The future is about insight, experimentation, discovery and connection using emerging technology.
The New Normal: Evaluating innovative lighting solutions for inpatient roomscamainc
Jennifer DuBose, LEED AP, EDAC, Senior Research Associate, Georgia Institute of Technology; Craig Zimring, PhD, Professor, Georgia Institute of Technology; Rosalyn Cama, FASID, EDAC, President, Cama, Inc.
In this multi-disciplinary panel discussion, panelists will explore: the biology behind light’s impact on clinical outcomes; recent lighting systems for inpatient rooms aimed at improving patient outcomes; and the results of a collaboration between clinicians and EBD researchers evaluating a new inpatient lighting system intended to provide the experience of sunshine in the room during the course of the day. At the end of this session participants will: understand the physiological and psychological impacts of lighting; understand and be able to evaluate lighting products; and, understand the practical complexities of clinically valid design research in a laboratory setting. This session will provide EDAC credits.
Designing Healthcare Technologies: Motivating Users by Decreasing Cognitive L...UXPA International
Healthcare users are a demanding group. Multiple beeping and blinking devices, frequent interruptions, competing demands, and high-risk tasks overload their cognitive capacity, leaving them with little patience for ambiguity or inefficiency and - more importantly - at risk for making serious errors. We will introduce participants to the factors motivating healthcare technology users by offering a peek into the world of a busy nurse and showing examples of the tragic errors that can result when overload occurs. We then propose six design principles based in cognitive theory and illustrated with real world examples as a framework to help UX designers motivate healthcare technology users by minimizing cognitive load. Participants will leave the session with actionable knowledge they can apply to current projects.

Understanding User Needs and Satisfying ThemAggregage
https://www.productmanagementtoday.com/frs/26903918/understanding-user-needs-and-satisfying-them
We know we want to create products which our customers find to be valuable. Whether we label it as customer-centric or product-led depends on how long we've been doing product management. There are three challenges we face when doing this. The obvious challenge is figuring out what our users need; the non-obvious challenges are in creating a shared understanding of those needs and in sensing if what we're doing is meeting those needs.
In this webinar, we won't focus on the research methods for discovering user-needs. We will focus on synthesis of the needs we discover, communication and alignment tools, and how we operationalize addressing those needs.
Industry expert Scott Sehlhorst will:
• Introduce a taxonomy for user goals with real world examples
• Present the Onion Diagram, a tool for contextualizing task-level goals
• Illustrate how customer journey maps capture activity-level and task-level goals
• Demonstrate the best approach to selection and prioritization of user-goals to address
• Highlight the crucial benchmarks, observable changes, in ensuring fulfillment of customer needs

Company Valuation webinar series - Tuesday, 4 June 2024FelixPerez547899
This session provided an update as to the latest valuation data in the UK and then delved into a discussion on the upcoming election and the impacts on valuation. We finished, as always with a Q&A
2. Overview and Reason Sleep disorder: Sleep inertia Interactive mattress protector that wakes you up Enables people to wake up feeling refreshed
3.
4. Problem statement: Activities Waking people up at the ideal stage of the sleep cycle http://helpguide.org/life/sleeping.htm
5. Problem statement: Context Environment: Bedrooms, hotel rooms, etc. Usually in the early mornings Situation: Ideal sleep stage to wake up from Physical Lightweight sheet on the bed
8. Strengths All-in-One Incorporates various technologies in a unique platform General target audience High Product Intelligence Prevents people from accidentally falling back into sleep Regulates biological clock over time
9. Criticism of our solution Cost – Do you think it will be very costly to incorporate all the different technologies in a single device? Multiple people on bed – Do you think the sensors will work as well?
Editor's Notes
First explain that everyone has suffered from the effects of sleep inertia- if you have ever woken up feeling groggy, you’ve been a victim of sleep inertia before.
Students and office workers are the ones most willing and likely to splurgeOffice workers in this case refer mostly to white collared workers
Waking up in the deeper sleep stage
Before- Lights increase gradually in intensity in 30 mins before the “wake up time”.- Natural sounds in 10mins- if sensor still detect user is still in deep sleep stage, vibrate to move user to REM stageDuring Vibration alarm Light shine at max intensity Sound – Classical music, gradually get louderAfterEverything off movement sensor detects if there is still movement from the user, if there is, it will keep shaking the user.
- It incorporate all existing technologies known to work in a single device.- Controlled using mobile phone
