- -Thank you for having me. I’m Robert, and today I will be telling you about permeable interlocking concrete pavements. Recently, Brown Bear has become concerned with the devastating impacts polluted runoff is having on local wildlife and has decided to act. This presentation is a response to that action.
- -From the previous research which led us here we learned that, due to urban sprawl, an important part of the natural water cycle has been disrupted. Infiltration into the soil, we discovered, is largely responsible for filtering precipitation and runoff before it enters our groundwater, streams, and water habitats. This infiltration has been cut off by the construction of impervious surfaces such as roads, parking lots, and buildings. We also learned that modern runoff management directs polluted runoff untouched to the nearest waterway.
- -Solutions are out there and Brown Bear recognizes an opportunity to seize upon one. As per your request, I introduce you to Permeable Interlocking Concrete Pavements as possibly such a solution.
- -PICPs consist of a surface of paving units with joints or openings filled with a loose aggregate, like sand or pebbles. These joints allow runoff from storms to flow freely into an aggregate base, such as gravel, and then infiltrate the soil. Or, the runoff could be collected and stored in reservoirs for later use. Either choice leads to a reduction in polluted runoff.
- -Upon closer inspection we can see how simple the concept is. Runoff can immediately drain through the gaps in the pavers, controlling flooding and reducing the accumulation of pollution. Infiltration is also immediate as the runoff filters down through the aggregate joint and base layers, preserving this crucial part of natural water cycle. Runoff can then enter natural water systems pollution free. Or, as mentioned, be collected and stored for immediate or later use. I think a car wash company could come up with a way to use that water.
- -Construction can be done with existing structures, or as part of new builds. The materials used are locally sourced, all-natural, minimally processed, inexpensive, and abundant.
- Due to their interlocking joints feature, PICPs can be constructed in an unlimited variety of shapes, colors, patterns, and designs. Brown Bear can make use of this customization to enhance the already vibrant, clean, and fun atmospheres they provide.
