Practice with cutting “lard,” eliminating passive voice, using active verbs.
Work due today:
 Read syllabus, course policies, and project 1 handout.
 Complete the Technology Check on BbLearn.
 Choose the prior writing you will use for project 1.
 Watch slidedocs 1 and 2 (note: all slidedocs have been created by Professor
Karen Thompson for ENGL 202)
 Charge and bring your laptop to class.
Thursday, 1/19
Practice using appropriate “stress emphasis,” and arranging for audience and purpose.
Analyzing writing for errors that workplace readers are likely to notice. Editing whole
pieces of writing.
Work due today:
 Watch slidedoc 3.
 Bring in a piece of professional writing (e.g. from a blog, documentation about a
consumer product or service, a government document, or other bad writing that
you’ve actually encountered) that you think shows some of the errors from
slidedocs 1-3.
 Bring the piece of writing you’re analyzing for Project 1.

The basics of document design; how to write the memo for Project 1.
Work due today:
 Watch slidedocs 4 and 5.
 Bring the piece of writing that you’re analyzing.
Thursday, 1/26
During today’s class, use the grading criteria to review team members’ drafts. Note:
Draft workshops are mandatory – students who are absent or come without a
completed draft will lose 20 points.
Work due today:
 Complete Draft Due for Peer Review. Depending on how you planned to share
drafts either print your draft or charge and bring your laptop to class. Your draft
should have the following elements:
o Memo heading.
o Introduction: use one of the rhetorical moves covered in slidedoc 4.
o One prose style entry (okay to do more): follow requirements in slidedoc 4.
o Charge and bring your laptop to class with rough draft.
Project 1 DUE: Sunday 1/29 before 11:59 PM
Submit project deliverable to drop box project 1 (below bolded due date on the course
