partecipazione attiva.
THE PHRYGIAN HAT
The Phrygian Hat (pileus) is a symbol which dates back to ancient times.
It was one of the attributes of the god Mitra, then adopted by the Persian
army, and in Ancient Rome it was the hat given to freed slaves:
hence its symbolical value of freedom.
In the Canavese it was found in the late 1300s in the peopleâs Tuchinaggio
rebellion and in old prints showing peasants living in the area around Ivrea,
wearing a red Phrygian hat.
It became an official part of Carnival in the period of Napoleonic rule.
Today it has to be worn from the Thursday before Lent,
not only to avoid being chosen as a target during the traditional Battaglia
delle arance â as dictated by the tradition and by the Generalâs Orders â
but above all to show oneâs full participation in the event.

5 REGOLE DâORO
per arrivare sani e salvi
a Polenta e merluzzo
Indossate abbigliamento sportivo, stivali
di gomma o scarpe facilmente lavabili
e che non scivolino.
Corteo Storico
in movimento.
Volontari
Tutti stanno lavorando per voi: rispettateli!
Fate quello che vi dicono, altrimenti vi manderanno
in-volontariamente a quel paese.

5 rules to get to the Polenta
e merluzzo (cod and polenta)
safe and sound
Berretto Frigio (Phyrigian Hat )
Never go out without your Berretto Frigio:
apart from making a poor show, you might
regret it. Donât leave your Berretto Frigio lying
on your shoulder: itâs as if you donât have
it on and you might even lose it. Be careful:
wearing a red hat that isnât the true Phyrigian
style means youâve got Ivrea Carnival all wrong!
Oranges
Donât forget to look around you at all
times and protect your face with your
arm: better to keep your eyes open
than get a black eye.
Donât stay too close with your face
to the protection nets: they are slack
and give easily.
Donât throw oranges at the carts
outside of the orange-throwing squares:
the rule is to throw at the people
in the carts not at those on foot.
Donât take oranges from the orange-
throwersâ crates: ask first.
Donât throw oranges at horses: itâs cruel.
Donât throw oranges at the horse
drivers: theyâll be cruel to you...
if they get down from their box.
Donât throw oranges at throwers without
masks, especially if theyâre engaged
in head-to-head fighting, youâll come
off worse.
Wear casual clothing, wellington boots or
shoes that donât slip and are easy to wash.
Historical Parade
Donât cross the parade: it is extremely rude to do so.
Donât get too near to the Mugnaiaâs
(Millerâs daughterâs) coach while itâs moving:
the wheelâs are heavy and the Escort is even heavier!
Donât ask for sweets and mimosa when the Mugnaiaâs
coach is stationary: she only throws them
when itâs moving.
Donât push or jostle the Pifferi (Pipers):
theyâre very touchy⌠and boxwood is hard!
Donât throw anything into the bells of the brass
band instruments: itâs off key.
Donât talk during the Funeral March:
after all it is a funeral!
Horses
Donât stroke the horses: they may not necessarily like it!
Donât stand in front of the horses: they might decide to set off without telling you.
Donât stand behind the horses: they might kick out without any notice.
Donât stand around near the horses: they have blinkers and canât see you.
Donât let children or strollers pass between you and the horses.
Be careful with strollers
It is absolutely forbidden to walk with pushchairs and prams in via Palestro,
piazza di CittĂ , Borghetto and all the areas involved in the Battaglia delle arance.
Volunteers
Everybody are working for you:
respect them!
Do what they say, otherwise they will involuntarily
tell you where to go.
Patience is endless⌠but not at Carnival!
