This document provides information on a Spanish language course titled "Spanish for Hospitality & Tourism Level 3" offered at the University of Technology, Jamaica. 1.0 MODULE DESCRIPTION:
This module seeks to consolidate the basic functions and structures of Spanish
learnt in level 2. Students should develop the ability to use Spanish comfortably
in everyday profession situations. While the language skills of listening, speaking,
reading and writing will continue to be strengthened, greater emphasis will be
placed on oral skills. Students will also explore in greater depth the socio-cultural
aspects of hospitality and tourism in the Spanish-speaking world.
2.0 MODULE OBJECTIVES:
At the end of this module, students should:
1. demonstrate the ability to use Spanish in everyday professional
communication situations
2. demonstrate an understanding of general professional texts and
discussions in Spanish
3. produce coherent texts in Spanish requiring increasingly complex
structured sentences and more specialised vocabulary
4. appreciate the similarities and differences between Jamaican and
Hispanic cultural forms

UNIT 1 “Planning a Tourism Event”

OBJECTIVES
On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

3. sell an event (wedding, conference, company incentives, sports events,
family gathering etc.) to a Hispanic clientele
4. prepare a budget for different types of events

UNIT 2 “Experiencing Travel Agency and Ecotourism Activities”

OBJECTIVES
On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1. obtain basic travel information from clients (destination, mode of
transport, travel dates, financial considerations and accommodation
options)
2. prepare a basic travel plan for a client
3. book flights and/or accommodation and ground transportation for a client
4. explain the concept of ecotourism
5. describe a variety of ecotourism resorts and modalities
6. describe products related to nature-based tourism activities
7. explain differences between ecotourism and other forms of tourism
8. promote different ecotourism modalities

2. fill in the application form for reserving space as a fair exhibitor
3. prepare exhibitor promotional material
4. make an inventory for a stand/booth
5. fill in customs documents
6. provide information on products being displayed for buyers
7. prepare a report on the exhibition

4.0 LEARNING & TEACHING APPROACHES
The communicative approach is the overarching methodology used in teaching
this module. It focuses on situational interaction as the context and ultimate
objective of language learning activities. To this end, students are expected to
demonstrate the capacity to respond in specific communication situations
involving native Spanish speakers as well as the ability to make themselves
understood. For this reason, role-playing, dialoguing and the setting up of
situational communication scenarios are heavily employed.
The support for the learning approach includes the use of web-based materials
as well as oral interactive and web-based activities. Emphasis is placed on the
ability to respond appropriately to situations both orally and in writing. In this way,
productive language skills are prioritised. Students will also interact with the
content through research activities involving the receptive skills of listening and
reading.

correct language in the depiction of an HTM oriented
professional role.

Students must demonstrate comprehension by responding
appropriately to a variety of questions related to tourism events,
eco-tourism, travel agency and tourism office situations.

Students must express themselves orally appropriately and
correctly in a job interview situation.
