- - Act respectfully: This one actually involves a lot of common sense. For example, having a good handshake is essential. Practice with your parents if needed. Address others with their titles (i.e. Doctor, Officer, and even sir and ma’am). Listen to what others have to say. Keep a respectful distance. Don’t think you’re too good to do your superiors a favor, but most people will reciprocate such respect. - Dress the part: You don’t have to abandon your personal style, but it is important that you convey a certain image to prospective employers or networking contacts. For example, don’t hesitate to get that button down in a colorful gingham or choose a cute but classy captoe ballet flat, but it may be inappropriate to put a lace camisole underneath a suit or wear too short a skirt (Believe me, I’ve seen both before, and neither make you particularly enthusiastic about what someone has to say.) - Clean up your social media: I cannot echo this enough in this day and age! Untag any partying photos if you must, but try to avoid having them taken in the first place. Keep your tweets general and tasteful. If you’re really concerned about people stumbling on your Facebook, though, it’s definitely not a bad idea to change your last name to your middle name!
- Professionalism is very important and can be the difference between job or no job; internship or no internship or whatever else you may want. It’s much more than just looks, it’s all about attitude.
- The term “work ethic” is defined as, “A set of values based on the moral virtues of hard work and diligence” (The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition).
- Many teenagers tend to bring their personal and school issues with them to the job. While this is only natural, you need to do your best to focus on the job instead of your personal issues. If you are having a fight with one of your parents or someone at school, you do not need to bring that attitude with you to your job. Try to forget about it while you are on the clock. If you continually bring your problems with you to work, your boss is going to notice and will most likely not appreciate it.
