What does it take to operationalize machine learning and AI in an enterprise setting?
Machine learning in an enterprise setting is difficult, but it seems easy. All you need is some smart people, some tools, and some data. It’s a long way from the environment needed to build ML applications to the environment to run them in an enterprise.
Most of what we know about production ML and AI come from the world of web and digital startups and consumer services, where ML is a core part of the services they provide. These companies have fewer constraints than most enterprises do.
This session describes the nature of ML and AI applications and the overall environment they operate in, explains some important concepts about production operations, and offers some observations and advice for anyone trying to build and deploy such systems.
Failing With Agile

Abstract:
There are always people who want agile projects to fail. This will probably be the case until agile is the preferred process methodology used for projects. Are you one of them? In this workshop Bob Hartman will give participants a how-to guide for causing agile process failure. Attendees will learn various failure modes and how to cause them. There will be group discussions and exercises exploring how the failure modes can manifest themselves in real projects. At the end of this workshop each attendee should have the ability to cause agile project failure in a variety of ways and under a variety of conditions.
Obviously the first paragraph is a bit tongue-in-cheek. Hopefully project managers do not want agile projects to fail, but they need to know how they could fail. This knowledge will translate into an ability to recognize the failure modes and take corrective action. Interestingly, many of the agile project failure modes are also failure modes in other project process methodologies. All project managers on agile projects or in organizations that are considering using an agile process should attend this workshop. Project managers in organizations which typically struggle with projects may also gain insight into their project failure modes.

It is time to fight the black holes in your software. Don't let legacy code dictate your work. Start learning and practicing dependency injection and refactoring. Become more agile.
Problem Solving
This document provides a six-step process for solving technology problems: 1) Stay calm, 2) Identify the problem, 3) Understand the problem, 4) Define your goal, 5) Develop solutions, and 6) Measure results. Each step is explained in detail with tips for effective problem solving such as communicating openly, considering different perspectives, and establishing metrics to track progress. The overall message is that following a consistent problem solving process can help achieve positive technology outcomes by focusing on understanding the problem fully before developing solutions and ensuring changes lead to the desired results.

The Black Box: Interpretability, Reproducibility, and Data Management
The growing complexity of data science leads to black box solutions that few people in an organization understand. You often hear about the difficulty of interpretability—explaining how an analytic model works—and that you need it to deploy models. But people use many black boxes without understanding them…if they’re reliable. It’s when the black box becomes unreliable that people lose trust.
Mistrust is more likely to be created by the lack of reliability, and the lack of reliability is often the result of misunderstanding essential elements of analytics infrastructure and practice. The concept of reproducibility—the ability to get the same results given the same information—extends your view to include the environment and the data used to build and execute models.
Mark Madsen examines reproducibility and the areas that underlie production analytics and explores the most frequently ignored and yet most essential capability, data management. The industry needs to consider its practices so that systems are more transparent and reliable, improving trust and increasing the likelihood that your analytic solutions will succeed.
This talk will treat the black boxed of ML the way management perceives them, as black boxes.
There is much work on explainable models, interpretability, etc. that are important to the task of reproducibility. Much of that is relevant to the practitioner, but the practitioner can become too focused on the part they are most familiar with and focused on. Reproducing the results needs more.

T security has become more of a concern to organizations big and small. Major security breaches or hacks are frequently reported in the media, and for every reported hack, dozens more are unreported. Small and medium-sized nonprofits are not immune to potential security breaches. Many nonprofit leaders consider the work they do of little or no value to hackers, since they’re not a bank or major retailer. Hackers prey on this naïve perception.
If you’re storing and working with data regarding members, donors, volunteers, clients or patrons, or credit cards, you could be at risk. Any breach could have severe ramifications, including loss of trust among your community or possible financial penalties.
Bad IT habits and practices make smaller nonprofits prime targets for hackers. Management, IT controls, and procedures introduce security risks to the organization. Hackers know that most small and medium-sized nonprofits don’t have the financial capacity or technical resources to implement security controls rivaling those of large organizations. Still, there are some basic sound IT practices and controls that can be put in place to provide a comfortable measure of control.
We’ll walk through the seven commonly-found bad habits and consider the potential IT security risk within each practice. We’ll also discuss effective IT policies, procedures, and tools to minimize security risks and transform bad habits into good ones.
This session is appropriate for any small or medium-sized nonprofit staff member responsible for making technology decisions, as well as nonprofit leaders influencing IT operations.
