Creative director Mike Neumann hinted at a sequel to Borderlands after the first game's unexpected success. On August 2nd, 2011, it was officially confirmed that Borderlands 2 would be made. Like most games, pre-production of Borderlands 2 involved planning out characters, plot, villains, NPCs, and drawing concept art. Production began building a brand new game from the ground up with new main characters, NPCs, villain, gun system, locations, and missions using the Unreal Engine 3 for realistic animations, audio, and terrains.
